Berkshire Hathaway Realtors Sarah E. Turner and Deborah Bochain are working on behalf of the homeowners of 24 Tory Drive in Uncasville, recently listed for $424,360. It’s a four-bedroom Cape Cod colonial, with a two-car garage, on a little over an acre.

Welcome Home spoke with one of the co-sellers, Karyn L’Heureux, about the property, which she and her husband have owned since 2021. The couple had previously lived in Florida, but her husband had grown up in Connecticut and always dreamed of returning to the state, where he has family. They bought the home “sight unseen” and in the thick of the COVID pandemic.

“We did not see it for the first time until we flew up for the inspection,” she said. “But it just felt like home.”

The dining room is situated in the floor plan steps from the kitchen.

L’Heureux said that it exceeded their expectations, recalling the feeling of finding their “forever home.”

The house was built in 1991, and it required just a few immediate improvements when they bought it. They installed a new furnace and hot water heater. To the interiors, they also laid down new oak hardwood floors, replacing carpeting throughout most of the living spaces. She noted how they chose interior paint colors that were more consistent with historic-period colonial homes.

“We also redid the kitchen counters, put in a subway tile backsplash and added under-cabinet lighting,” she said.

The front door opens to a large living room at the front of the floor plan. Along the back of the house, there’s a dining room, kitchen and a full hall bath. There’s also an expansive family room, with French door access out to a backyard deck. Two of the home’s four bedrooms are the main level, as well. The two additional bedrooms—one, with two closets—are on the second floor, where there’s a shared hall bath.

The current owners made a number of improvements to the house since 2021, including the installation of a new furnace, new hot water heater, and oak hardwood floors. They also painted the interiors with a color palette they felt was more in keeping with an historic Cape Cod house, though this home was built in 1991.

The 1,790-square-foot Cape Cod-style colonial is situated on a 1.06-acre lot that’s part of a cul-de-sac community. It has an attached two-car garage in the lower level, plus unfinished basement storage space and a laundry area.

In addition to the backyard deck, there’s an area with a fire pit. It has electrical service, which a previous owner had run to an above-ground pool. L’Heureux said that it’s possible to add a new pool—pending permit approval—to the area, or perhaps a hot tub or screened gazebo.

Her husband built a raised bed garden, where she grew greens and peppers, and there are two sheds and a chicken coop in the backyard. “One of the sheds, I mainly used for gardening and chicken coop supplies; the other is massive, and it’s where we kept the lawnmower, snowblower and other tools,” she said.

This second-story bedroom—one of four bedrooms in the 1,790-square-foot home—has a vaulted ceiling and two closets.

The backyard is fenced, she noted, with three gates—one each on either side of the house, and one at the back of the property.

One of the things the couple enjoyed about the home’s location was its proximity to places of interest, including historic sites in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. “We are history buffs, and we loved going to Boston and other places. We also visited Block Island,” she recalled.

An aerial photo shows the property’s proximity to the Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino. It’s also quite close to Mystic, where the co-owner commuted to work, and to other area employers, such as General Dynamics/Electric Boat, the Naval submarine base in Groton, Pfizer and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Though they’d intended for the property to be their forever home, life changed courses for the couple, and they’ve relocated to care for family members in Florida. “If we could have picked up the house and brought it here, we would have,” the seller said. She added that they appreciated the neighborhood and the neighbors, who she described as “kind families.”
