All-Area High School Athletes
No one in the Shoreline Conference was better than Old Lyme senior George Danes, who went undefeated in singles action for the third regular season in a row, winning the Shoreline title and earning all-state honors.

Diligent Stonington High School senior Nancy Inthasit won the Class S state title in the 55-meter dash and as part of the sprint medley relay. She was named The Day's 2022 All-Area Girls' Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Michael Urgo, a junior at Wheeler High School who swims for the Fitch cooperative team, is The Day's 2022 All-Area Swimmer of the Year. He was ECC Swimmer of the Meet and earned Class L all-state honors in three events.
Coach Randy Craig typically waits until after the first week of preseason practice to name captains for the Eastern Connecticut Eagles hockey team. He made an exception with Anthony Gesino, whom he selected months before that.
"She never stops playing at her best no matter whether it's a practice or a game," Waterford softball coach Andy Walker said of junior Maddie Burrows. "Whether it's just shagging a fly ball, she's going full bore, never taking a moment off."
About six years ago, East Lyme High School senior Dan Singer found his father’s old golf clubs while cleaning the basement with his mother. Little did Singer know that the discovery would lead to a love affair with the sport.
East Lyme junior Sydney Sager was named The Day's 2021 All-Area Girls' Lacrosse Player of the Year. A first team all-state pick, Sager finished with 33 goals and 12 assists, but it was her ability to control the midfield which stood out.
East Lyme senior Matt Valakos had 64 goals and 68 assists this season for 132 points. He earned Class M all-state and U.S. Lacrosse All-America honors, as well as being named The Day's 2021 All-Area Boys' Lacrosse Player of the Year.
Waterford High School freshman Sarah Hage was named The Day's 2021 All-Area Girls' Tennis Player of the Year. She was the ECC champ, dispatching Stonington's Maddie Hamm 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a 3-hour, 16-minute match.
We celebrate a post-pandemic return to normalcy this season by once again naming an All-Area team for each one of our nine spring sports to go along with the introduction of our players of the year in each of those sports.
