Dr. I: If NL really wants to give a voice to the voiceless ...

Idle Thoughts, while waiting for beach season, baseball season and road construction season:

    • Dr. Idle, Dr. I to his close friends, got a chuckle from the recent update on the New London Community Center.

Far be it from Dr. I to get cynical and wonder if this isn't actually targeted as some after-work swimming facility for E.B. yuppies.

Lest we forget this is supposed to be a place for the kids, too.

So has anyone ventured inside New London High or Bennie Dover and asked the kids what amenities THEY would like in this glorious new facility?

We talk about giving a voice to the voiceless a lot here in the 06320.

This would be a scintillating place to start.

    • Again: Not to be Gloomy Gladys. But which of Tyrese Martin's basketball skills translate to the NBA?

    • Congrats to Griswold High grad Wally Hansen. Wally is the coach of the Granby High boys' basketball team who made the finals last weekend at Mohegan Sun. Great season.

    • Speaking of Neon Uncasville: Interesting scene at last week's championships.

Two male members of Newington High chamber choir, who did an otherwise stellar job with the national anthem, sang the song while wearing baseball caps.

    (Sigh.)

    • Can we all stop trumpeting the greatness of Gonzaga?

The Calvin Schiraldi of the NCAA.

    • RIP, Art Kohs.

Mr. Kohs, who died last week at 84, began sports at Xavier High. His sons, Tim and Mike, coach Mercy and Xavier basketball respectively. Great man, great family.

    • OK. Dr. I is hardly George Clooney. (At this rate he's not even George Burns.) So the following question isn't a stone aimed at a glass house.

But does Bob Huggins own a mirror?

Gloryoski. It's one thing to coach a game looking like an unmade bed. But his appearances last week on one of the 413 channels CBS used to televise March Madness was what the smart people call a "bad optic."

    • Can Trevor Story pitch?

    • Dr. I summons his local soccer cabinet — Leo Roche, Matt Forde, Alan Sheehan, Roy Collins — for some help.

Need a team to root for in the World Cup with Italy (gulp) out.

Dr. I tried Egypt last time and came away disappointed.

    • The officiating, or lack thereof, in the UConn/UCF women's game last week inspired a memory from the old days on the UConn beat.

The late, great Randy Smith of the Manchester Journal-Inquirer asked Pat Summitt once, "So, coach, when do you think the officiating will catch up to the level of play?"

(Summitt chuckled and said, "I'll let y'all answer that one.")

    • Lou Piniella's salary for the 1977 Yankees: $76,500. Sorry, but Dr. I finds that fascinating.

    • Is it too early to talk about New Mexico State?

    • March is National Athletic Training Month, aimed to spread awareness about the important work of athletic trainers.

Dr. I salutes a few of his favorites: Ashley James (Ledyard), Katie Cooper (Stonington), Bethany Grady (Fitch) and Michelle LaForte (New London).

    • It won't be long now until we're talking spin rate again.

It just gives Dr. I the warm fuzzies.

    • Dr. I's favorite men's college basketball coach: Ed Cooley, Providence.

Not just because he's a good dude. But because of what Kris Dunn's dad, John Seldon, said of Cooley during the recruiting process:

"Of all the coaches who recruited Kris," Seldon said, "the only one who talked about his education was Ed Cooley."

    • Welcome to the world Luca Salvatore Tantillo, the newborn son of Mena and Josh; the newborn grandson of Mike and Heather Buscetto.

May Luca have his grandfather's sense of humor and his grandmother's talent for chicken cutlets.

    • How considerate of Tom Brady to announce his un-retirement during the Selection Show.

Nah, that wasn't calculated or anything.

May Dr. I come over borrow a cup of ego, Tom?

This is the opinion of Day sports columnist Mike DiMauro
