East Lyme — More than 70 junior sailors from the region took part in the Larry White Regatta at Niantic Bay Yacht Club earlier this month.

An instrumental contributor to junior sailing throughout his career, Larry White is responsible for the growth of high school sailing in the United States, including starting the local sailing team at East Lyme High School. For his efforts, White was awarded U.S. Sailing’s most prestigious award, the Nathaneal G. Herreshoff Trophy, in 2005.

Awards were given to the top three competitors in each division. Olivia Murin of Niantic Bay Yacht Club took first in the Optimist Green fleet, Mason Zagol (New England Sailing and Science) in the Opti RWB fleet, Fischer Smith and Ben Brown (Sachem’s Head YC) were first in the RS Feva fleet and Ike Schultz and Avery Peterson (Sachem’s Head) were the winners of the C420 fleet.

The regatta was awarded a gold designation for its environmental practices from Sailors for the Sea. To achieve that honor, practices included paperless entries, no single use water bottles, signs made from repurposed materials and the hosting of beach cleanups.

“We are not just teaching kids how to sail. We are teaching kids to appreciate the environment in which they sail,” Sailing Academy president Ken Shluger said.
