    Local roundup: Waterford 13s win New England Babe Ruth tournament opener

    Trumbull — Matt Shampine pitched a complete game two-hitter as Waterford rallied for a 2-1 victory over Tri-County (Maine) in their opening game of the New England Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball tournament on Friday.

    Waterford (1-0) plays Three Corners (Vermont) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their second game of round-robin play.

    Shampine struck out 10 for the Connecticut champions, who trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Shampine and Cole Peckham scored on back-to-back wild pitches with no outs to give Waterford the lead.

    Shampine and Riley Montana each had a hit for Waterford.

    Legion state baseball

    • Waterford is the top overall seed and will play No. 8 Greenwich in the first round of the Bristol Sub Regional tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Muzzy Field. No. 4 Willimantic will face No. 5 Stamford in the first game of the double-elimination regional at 11:30 a.m. Waterford and Willimantic finished 1-2 in the Zone VI standings.

    • Chaz Myers (Pacific) went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Reed Mascolo (Wake Forest) allowed just two hits over five innings as the Bristol Blues shut out the Mystic Schooners 5-0 on Thursday night. Ryan Wilson (Davidson) hit a two-run single for the Blues (27-10). Anthony Donofrio (Quinnipiac) and Pawcatuck’s Kevin Ferrer (UConn) both singled and scored for the Schooners (20-17).

    • Cody Kashimoto (Saint Mary’s) went 2-for-3 with two runs as the Brockton Sox downed Norwich Sea Unicorns 6-4 on Thursday night. Peter Messervy (Harvard) had two hits and an RBI for the Sox (20-29). Nick Sturino (Fairfield) went 2-for-2 and scored for the Sea Unicorns (22-27) and Cameron Maldonado (Northeastern) hit an RBI single and scored.
