Local roundup: Sylvia’s no-hitter sends Waterford to Connecticut American Legion title series

Bristol ― Quinn Sylvia pitched a no-hitter as Waterford defeated Stamford 4-0 on Tuesday night to win the Connecticut American Legion baseball tournament’s Bristol Super Regional at Muzzy Field.

Waterford will play Danbury, which beat West Haven 13-1 in five innings to win the Middletown Super Regional, in a best-of-three series for the state championship this weekend at Palmer Field in Middletown. Game 1 is Friday night at 6:30 p.m., Game 2 is Saturday at 1 p.m. and a deciding game, if necessary, will start 30 minutes following the completion of Game 2.

Sylvia walked six, struck out five and was aided by a big double play in the sixth inning. Waterford led 2-0 when a walk and error put a pair of Stamford baserunners on with no outs. But centerfielder Connor Rowe caught a fly ball, doubled off the runner at second base and Syliva struck out Ben Isenstein to end the inning.

Waterford then broke the game open with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Evan McCue and Aidan Whitten.

Waterford took a 2-0 lead in the first as Preston Tabor head a leadoff double, scored on Kenny Miller’s single, and after singles by McCue and Jack Lathrop loaded the bases, Whitten singled home Miller.

Miller, Whitten and McCue finished with two hits apiece.

    N.E. Babe Ruth (13s)

    • Waterford rode another dominant pitching performance, this time by Matt Shampine, to reach the New England Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball tournament championship game.

Shampine pitched a complete game six-hitter with seven strikeouts, the fourth straight game Waterford has allowed just a single run, in a 3-1 victory over host Trumbull in the semifinals.

Waterford will play Pittsfield (Mass.), an 11-4 winner over Tri-County (Maine) in the other semifinal, in Wednesday’s championship game at 10 a.m. at Trumbull High School. Both teams are 4-0 in the tournament.

The winner will advance to the Babe Ruth World Series starting Aug. 12 in Glen Allen, Va.

Cole Peckham put Waterford ahead in the third with an RBI single and Alex Picardi later added an RBI single. Picardi and Shampine also had doubles while Chase Nolda and Riley Montana also had hits for Waterford, the Connecticut state champion.

    N.E. Babe Ruth (15s)

    • Waterford’s run in the New England Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament came to an end with a 4-1 semifinal loss to Lynn (Mass.) in Keene (N.H.). Lynn went on to defeat Three Corners (Vt.) 7-5 in the championship game.
