    H.S. football roundup: Griswold routs NW Catholic 40-0 in opener

    Bloomfield — KinKade Rubino rushed for a 165 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries as the Griswold/Wheeler cooperative football program opened its season with a 40-0 victory over Northwest Catholic on Saturday morning at Bloomfield High School.

    Rubino also kicked a pair of extra points for the Wolverines while Joshua Turner had six rushes for 71 yards and two touchdowns, Aiden Cutter rushed for a touchdown and Logan Davis had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

    In late Friday games:

    • James Green rushed for 263 yards and four touchdowns as Ledyard used a dominating rushing effort to a 56-22 season-opening non-conference road victory over East Haven.

    The Colonels finished with 413 rushing yards on 31 attempts as Green averaged 23.9 yards per carry on his 13 attempts, scoring on runs of 55, 52, 28 and 38. He also ran for five two-point conversions.

    Myles Streckfuss (58 yards) and Jacob Lenz (12) also had rushing touchdowns for Ledyard while quarterback Jackson Poulton was a perfect 2-for-2 for 111 yards and both passes went to Jaxon Barboza for touchdowns. They hooked up for 68-yards in the first half, helping the Colonels lead 22-14 at the half, and opened the second half with a 47-yard strike that pushed the lead to 30-14 after Green added the two-point conversion.

    Ledyard finished the game with 524 total offensive yards.

    • Adonis Fine broke free for a pair of long touchdown runs to highlight Fitch’s 22-14 season-opening non-conference win at Guilford. Fine carried the ball just six times, but finished with 177 yards, including TD runs of 68 yards in the first quarter and 72 in the third.

    Leading 16-7 after three quarters, the Falcons got some breathing room in the fourth when Ben Perry threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Saintvile-Ravis. Saintvile-Ravis and T.J. Miller added two-point conversions for Fitch.

    Perry completed 5 of 7 passes for 83 yards and Melakai Maddox added 84 rushing yards on 19 carries.
