    Local college roundup: Coast Guard falls to Nichols in football

    Dudley, Mass. — A fourth-quarter rally by the Coast Guard Academy football team came up short as the Bears lost 37-33 to Nichols College on Saturday.

    Nichols’ Derek Revolus picked off a pass by Coast Guard quarterback Joey Armentrout in the end zone on the final play of the game.

    Coast Guard’s last drive started with 1:34 left on its own 35. A pass interference penalty on Nichols gave the Bears a first-and-goal with four seconds left.

    Bears running back Spencer McMillion had a huge day, rushing for four touchdowns while finishing with 190 yards on 30 carries.

    Nichols (3-0) led 16-7 at halftime as quarterback Xavier Powell threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tiago Fernandes and also scored on a 2-yard run. The Bison increased their lead to 28-6 after three quarters before Coast Guard (1-2) began its rally.

    McMillion’s second touchdown run came from five yards out with 12:31 left to get the Bears within 28-19. A field goal by Nichols made it 31-19, but McMillion’s 2-yard TD run and an extra point by Finnegan Hall made it 31-26 with 9:07 left.

    Nichols went up 37-26 on a 14-yard scoring pass from Kyle Keckler to Kevin Pinheiro with 4:05 left. McMillion’s final TD, 10-yard run, and Hall’s extra point came with 2:47 left.

    Armentrout was 24-for-44 for 268 yards and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Broock Desta in the first quarter. Desta caught 10 passes for 106 yards. Garrrett Bragg led the defense with 10 tackles and Tyler Jones had nine tackles.

    Men’s soccer

    • Noslin Antunez’s unassisted goal in the 77th minute snapped a tie and led Mitchell College to a 2-1 win over Anna Maria. The Mariners (2-3) took a 1-0 lead when former Lyman Memorial standout Dylan Lucey scored 7:38 into the game off an assist from Waterford’s Jeremy Gibbs. Dylan Kinsella made four saves for Mitchell.

    • Coast Guard and WPI played to a 0-0 tie in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. Max Pfleghar made five saves for Coast Guard (4-0-1), which outshot WPI 13-11.

    • Bowdoin beat Connecticut College 1-0 in a NESCAC game. Michael Webber’s unassisted goal in the 90th minute was the difference. Sam Maidenberg made three saves for Conn (2-1-1, 0-1-1).

    Women’s soccer

    • Mitchell picked up its first win of the season, beating Brooklyn 3-0. Madison Nicynski, Mariah Travisano and Elon Johnson had unassisted goals for the Mariners (1-3-1) and Gemma Landry and Angelina Munoz combined for three saves.

    • Coast Guard beat Wellesley 1-0 in the NEWMAC opener for both teams. Karagan Bulger’s unassisted goal at 8:17 was all the offense the Bears (4-2) would need as the defense and goalie Emily Scharnitzky (10 saves) made the goal stand up. Wellesley (3-2) outshot Coast Guard 18-6.

    • Conn College’s Ella Davidyock scored in the 63rd minute to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Camels a 2-1 win over Bowdoin in NESCAC play. Conn (3-1, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead when Old Lyme’s Mya Johnson scored 3:30 in the game. Sarah Hall made nine saves and Clare Mulvihill and Emma Quilty had assists for the Camels.

    Volleyball

    • Conn College blanked Bates 25-10, 25-23, 25-19, for its first NESCAC win. Katherine Randall had 13 kills and 21 digs, Christina Leduc had seven kills and 12 digs, Katie Gunderman had 11 assists and 17 digs and Olivia Dow had 14 assists and 17 digs for the Camels (3-1, 1-1).

    • Coast Guard dropped its NEWMAC opener, falling to Babson 3-1. Babson won 25-8, 26-28, 25-14, 25-19. Noelle Tursky had nine kills and seven assists, Allie Wildsmith had six kills, Maeve Duffin had 13 assists, Kaela France had 20 digs and Carmen Zipf had nine digs for the Bears (9-2).

    Field hockey

    • Conn College was outshot 23-4 in a 4-0 loss to Bowdoin in the NESCAC. Sophia Moniz made seven saves for the Camels (1-3, 0-2).

    Men’s cross country

    • Coast Guard finished 16th at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. Jake Thoenen (26:22.33) and Paul Hobbs (26:22.84) were the top finishers for the Bears.

    Women’s cross country

    • Coast Guard put three runners in the top 30 in a fifth-place finish at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. Claire Semerod was third in 18:02, Lauren Mellon finished 23rd (18:39) and Hope Shales was 30th (18:49).
