    Local college roundup: Norwich beats CGA 31-23 in NEWMAC football opener for both

    Northfield, Vt. — Mitchell Theal threw three touchdown passes, including a 3-yarder to Trevor Chase with only 2 minutes, 25 seconds remaining, as Norwich University outlasted Coast Guard Academy 31-23 on Saturday in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference football opener for both schools.

    The Bears (2-3, 0-1) had pulled to within 24-20 on the second of three Finnegan Hall field goals when Theal marched the Cadets (2-3, 1-0) 80 yards on 12 plays covering 6:27 before connecting with Chase to put the game out of reach.

    Theal completed 25 of 36 passes for 350 yard and three touchdowns, all going to Chase, who had 12 receptions for 185 yards.

    Quarterback Joey Armentrout had a big afternoon for Coast Guard, He completed 24 of 42 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns while rushing rushing for 74 yards on 18 carries.

    Broock Desta was on the receiving end of both TDs for the Bears in the opening quarter, the first from 17 yards out and the second covering 63 yards. He finished with seven catches for 123 yards.

    Coast Guard running back Spencer McMillion, who came into the game averaging 163.3 rushing yards per game, was limited to 23 yards on six carries.

    Men’s soccer

    • Hamilton College built a 2-0 lead and hung on to defeat Connecticut College 2-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Augie Djerdaj, assisted by Elliot Spatz, scored in the 84th minute for the Camels (3-2-2, 1-2-1).

    • Coast Guard suffered its first loss of the season when MIT scored in the second half to beat the Bears 1-0 in the NEWMAC. John Flynn knocked in a rebound off a direct kick in the 61st minute for MIT (6-5, 3-0). Goalie Max Pflegher made two saves for CGA (6-1-2, 1-1-1), which held a 9-8 edge in shots.

    Women’s soccer

    • Goals by Emma Quilty, Amanda Behre and Ella Gazo lifted Conn College to a 3-0 win over Hamilton in the NESCAC. Jamie Scarpantonio, Old Lyme’s Mya Johnson and Lauren Anastos had assists for the Camels (5-2-1, 2-1-1) while goalie Sarah Hall made three saves to earn the shutout.

    • Jen Walker scored goals just 10 seconds part in the second half to lift Springfield College to a 2-0 NESCAC win over Coast Guard. The Pride are 5-2-1, 3-0. Emily Scharnitzky made six saves in goal for the Bears (4-4-1, 1-2).

    • Ileana Perez scored a pair of goals while Elon Johnson added a goal and an assist to highlight Mitchell College’s 6-1 non-conference win over York (N.Y.). New London’s Cassandra Roman, Mariah Trevisano and Araceli Archer also scored goals for the Mariners (4-4-1).

    Volleyball

    • Emerson rolled to a 25-11, 25-17 and 25-20 win over Coast Guard in the NEWMAC. Emerson is 10-1, 3-1. Noelle Tursky led the Bears (11-5, 2-3) with eight kills, 11 assists and five digs while Maeve Duffin finished with 11 assists, three aces and seven digs, Shannon Shaw had seven kills and Kaela France had two aces and seven digs.

    • Natashia Shrivastava had 24 assists, 10 digs and three aces during Conn College’s 25-11, 25-18 and 25-23 loss to Amherst in the NESCAC. Julia Dailey added 18 digs and Riley Lord 10 kills for the Camels (5-5, 1-3).

    • Mitchell College outlasted Curry 3-1 in a non-conference match. Game scores were 25-18, 25-16, 18-25 and 25-14. Allison Blum had 10 digs, 10 digs and seven aces to lead the Mariners (8-5) while Olivia DeLoach had nine kills, including the 500th of her career, and 18 digs. Claire Binfield added 24 assists, Molly Steel-Miller six kills and Julia Lent 12 digs.

    Field hockey

    • Hamilton defeated Conn College 2-1 in the NESCAC. The Camels (2-6, 0-4) scored their only goal in the fourth quarter when Sydney Cresta found the back of the net in the 49th minute. Goalie Sophie Moniz made five saves for Conn.

    Men’s cross country

    • Matt Carter finished third overall as Conn College placed 10th at the Division III Pre-National Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. Carter was timed in 24:31 for the Camels, who had 301 team points. Jeffrey Love added a 13th-place finish for Conn in 24:53 while Brendan Mellitt also cracked the Top 50 in 43rd (25:44).

    • Coast Guard had all five of its point-scorer finish inside the Top 25 as the Bears placed sixth with 174 points at the Purple Valley Invite in Williamstown, Mass. Freshman Paul Hobbs led CGA in 26th place (27:17) and was followed by Jake Thoenen (32nd, 27:37), Kyle Boe (33rd, 27:46), Braden Zukowski (40th, 28:32) and John Hanson (43rd, 28:38).

    Women’s cross country

    • Conn College placed 15th with 472 points at the Division III Pre-National Invite in East Lansing, Mich. Julia Curran was Conn’s top finisher in 23rd place (22:40) while Lauren Hino wound up 77th in 23:42 and was only other Camel runner to earn a Top 100 finish.

    • Freshman Claire Semerod finished seventh overall in 23:26 and led Coast Guard to a fourth-place finish at the Purple Valley Invite in Williamstown, Mass. The Bears finished with 105 points as Hope Shales placed 18th (24:08), Lauren Mellon 20th (24:13), Megan Churm 29th (24:49) and Taylor Winters 31st (24:53).
