    Fitch Hall of Fame to honor 15

    Groton — The Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame will honor 14 former athletes and one distinguished coach in its eighth induction class on Nov. 13.

    The dinner will take place at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church Hall, 69 Groton Long Point Road in Groton. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the Fitch High School Athletic Office. For questions, contact Fitch athletic director Marc Romano at (860) 449-7200.

    Honorees are:

    • Courtland Miner (Class of 1932) — Miner played football for three seasons, scoring the first touchdown in program history and serving as captain his senior year. He also lettered in track and field twice.

    • Ruth Bosworth Sadler (Class of 1933) — Sadler was captain of the basketball team for two years, leading the team in scoring and playing in the midst of a 21-game winning streak.

    • Leon Nash Sr. (Class of 1941) — Nash played football, basketball and baseball every year in high school. In football, he played played offensive and defensive line and was known for his outstanding defensive play. He was named co-captain of the football team as a junior and a senior and earned honorable mention All-ECC honors as a senior. He played shortstop and pitched for the baseball team, leading the team in hitting as a senior, and was one of the top scorers in basketball.

    • Norman Tedford (Class of 1951) — Tedford played football, basketball and baseball for three years. He was named to the All-ECC football team as a sophomore and a junior, starting at quarterback and punting. He was a top pitcher for the baseball team, once striking out 15 in a game against Stonington.

    • Gary Burfoot (Class of 1967) — Burfoot participated in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for all three years, captaining all three sports as a senior. In cross country, Burfoot was All-CDC, all-state and All-New England three years times, leading Fitch to the Class L and State Open titles in 1966 following a 13-0 regular season.

    • Mary Persechino (Class of 1973) — Persechino participated in track and field all three years, setting school and state records in the shot put and discus. As a junior, she set the school record for both the shot (36-5) and the discus (116-10) and followed that with state records in the shot (41-0.75) and disc (118-0.5), which she held throughout her career at Fitch.

    • Elbert Perry (Class of 1979) — “Bo” Perry ran for 780 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior football player, leading the SAC in rushing and earning all-conference honors at running back. In outdoor track he was on the 4x100 relay team which was given All-SAC and All-Area recognition all three years. He was undefeated in the 400 in dual meets in both his junior and senior years and set the school’s record in the 400 in 49.8, a mark which stood for 30 years. On the indoor track team he was SAC champion in the 300 and named to the all-league team as a junior and senior.

    • Mike Menhart (Class of 1980) — Menhart was named All-SAC as a junior and senior in soccer. He received the team’s Coaches Award for his senior season, being named to the 1980 Parade All-American Soccer Team receiving a Certificate of Achievement by the All-America Soccer Association.

    • Vanessa Zalegowski Parungao (Class of 1989) — As a volleyball player, Parungao received Fitch’s Most Improved Player Award as a junior and as a senior she was named a co-captain, team MVP, received the Art Carmichael Spiking Award and was named to The Day’s All-Area team and the Class L all-state team. In track, she competed in the 200, 400, 4x400 relay, 1,600 and long jump, leading the Falcons to an unbeaten dual meet season in 1989 as they won the ECC and Class L championships. She was named the school’s CIAC Scholar-Athlete and was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the Fitch Booster Club.

    • Michelle Land Friedman (Class of 1993) — Friedman was a two-time All-ECC pick in soccer, basketball and softball and Fitch’s MVP in all three sports. In basketball, she was chosen to play in the Senior Regional All-Star game and led the Falcons with 13.7 points per game. In softball, she led the team in stolen bases (28) and made The Day’s All-Area team as a senior. At the end of her senior year, the Fitch Booster Club named her Female Athlete of the Year.

    • Michael Scott (Class of 1995) — Scott was a running back and linebacker for the football team which finished 10-0 and won the ECC title his senior season. In his senior year he ran for more than 100 yards multiple times, finishing with 1,009 yards rushing. Scott was also a sprinter for the indoor and outdoor track teams, earning All-ECC honors. He was a member of Fitch’s 4x100 relay team outdoors which finished second in Class L and fourth in the State Open.

    • Emily Watson Geer (Class of 2002) — Geer earned 12 letters in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Her personal records included: 3:15 in the indoor 1,000, 5:22 in the outdoor 1,600 and 20:05 in the cross country 5K. Her cross country team won four ECC titles, four Class L titles and three State Open championships. She was named All-ECC and All-Area twice in cross country, twice to the all-state team and once earned All-New England recognition.

    • George Hall (Class of 2002) — Hall played defensive end for the Fitch football teams which qualified for the state playoffs four times and won two championships, earning All-ECC honors three times and all-state recognition twice. As a junior, Hall finished with six sacks and also scored 17 touchdowns as the Falcons starting fullback as they won the 2000 Class L championship and finished No. 1 in the state poll. The following year, Hall, who went on to play at Purdue, ran for 12 touchdowns. He also played baseball and basketball.

    • Tyler Latham (Class of 2014) — Latham was named the 2014 Gatorade Connecticut Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year, capping a season in which he won the state decathlon title, ECC and Class MM titles in the 110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles and javelin and the State Open crown in the 300 hurdles and javelin. Latham, who went on to run at Central Connecticut State University, launched his career by winning the State Open javelin title as a sophomore. From there, he won multiple indoor and outdoor ECC and state championships and graduated holding school records in the 300 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 400 and sprint medley relay outdoors and the 55 hurdles and sprint medley indoors. He was The Day’s two-time All-Area Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. He still holds Class MM outdoor track records in the 300 hurdles (38.72) and the javelin (194-5).

    • Gerald Browning (coach) — Browning taught at Fitch 30 years, retiring in 2001. During his career, he coached boys’ outdoor track, girls’ cross country and boys’ cross country. His 1973 girls’ cross country team was the state runner-up and State Open runner-up, while the team that followed in 1974 was second in the state but won the State Open meet. Fitch won Class L state championships in boys’ cross country in 1998 and 1999, following with the State Open and New England titles in 1998.
