    Colchester — Sixth-seeded Bacon Academy defeated defending champion Stonington 2-1 in the second round of the CIAC Class M boys’ soccer tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

    It marked the fourth one-goal game of the season between the two Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II rivals, who wound up splitting 2-2.

    The Bobcats (14-3-2) advance to Friday’s quarterfinals where they will host No. 14 Cromwell, a 2-1 winner over No. 30 Lewis Mills, at 2 p.m. The 11th-seeded Bears finish 12-5-3.

    All three goals came in the first half.

    Bacon took a 1-0 lead just for minutes into the game on an unassisted goal by Colby Butterfield. Stonington tied it eight minutes later when Brett Caron scored (Anders Dahl had the assist), but the Bobcats scored the the game-winner just four minutes before the end of the first half when Tyler Pulse blasted a shot into the net from 20 yards out.

    Evan St. Louis made six saves in goal for Bacon.

    In other games:

    • Anders Silberberg scored a pair of goals as No. 18 Old Lyme defeated No. 2 St. Bernard 3-0 in the Class S second round. The Wildcats (9-6-3) will host No. 26 Notre Dame of Fairfield, a 2-1 winner over No. 10 Somers, in Friday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Luke Celic also scored for Old Lyme, Lucas Dasilva added an assist and goalie Jonah Lathrop made three saves to earn the shutout. Dan O’Brien stopped 15 shots for the Saints, who finish 15-3-1.

    • Nick Santana, who has committed to Division I Penn State, scored three goals as No. 8 Notre Dame of West Haven defeated No. 9 East Lyme 6-1 in the Class L second round. Luke Salan, assisted by Diego Virgen, scored for the Vikings, who finish 13-4-3, and goalies Connor Piper and Ben Johnson combined for 10 saves.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Top-seeded Griswold made quick work of No. 16 Windham with a 25-6, 25-14 and 25-12 win over the Whips in the Class S second round. The victory sets up a huge quarterfinal match on Friday at home against No. 8 Lyman Memorial, the reigning champion. Kuranda Ruggiero had 18 assists, five digs, four aces and two kills for the Wolverines (21-1) while Gretta Dombkowski had seven aces, seven kills and eight digs, Abby Matheson six kills, three digs and two aces, and Makayla Neilson five kills.

    • Lyman cruised into the quarterfinals with a 25-18, 25-11 and 25-9 win over No. 9 Innovation. Kassidy LaTour had seven digs, 11 kills and eight assists for the No. 8 Bulldogs (20-5) while Carlee DeRoehn finished with seven kills, five digs and 10 assists, Arianna Garcia had eight digs and Mia Attardi seven.

    • No. 11 Waterford roll past No. 6 Whitney Tech 25-15, 25-9 and 25-11 in the Class M second round. Lillian Steinhaus had 19 assists, four aces, four digs and two kills for the Lancers (20-5) while Brielle Kenney added six kills and Addison Mobley had four kills and two blocks. Waterford will host No. 19 Oxford in Friday’s quarterfinals.

    • No. 12 Wheeler had a comeback for the ages in its 3-2 victory over No. 5 Holy Cross in the Class S second round. After dropping the first two sets 28-26 and 25-17, the Lions (18-6) rallied to win the next two games 25-22 and 25-18. They then trailed 12-10 in the final set before scoring the final five points to advance. Abby Butremovic had 37 digs to lead Wheeler, which plays at No. 4 East Hampton in Friday’s quarterfinals, while Anna Ruggeri added 30 assists and Makayla Delzer had nine kills and two blocks.

    Men’s basketball

    • Mitchell College opened its season with an 80-68 non-conference road loss at Anna Maria. Waterford’s Mikey Buscetto had 18 points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals to lead the Mariners while Alfonzo Stokes had 16 points and New London’s Jalen Benson had 10 ponits, five rebounds and three steals.

    H.S. diving

    • Waterford’s Hannah Ard finished 14th in the CIAC Class S diving championships at Sheehan High in Wallingford. Ard finished with 271.35 points. The winner was Weston’s Francesca Sparagna with 375.90.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • The Williams School advanced to the Housatonic Valley Athletic League final with a 4-1 semifinal win over Christian Heritage School. The Blues will host Wooster in Saturday’s title game. Skylar Frost scored a pair of goals, one on a penalty kick, the lead the Blues while Marlee Anselmi also scored a goal.

    • Alexis Fenton had two goals and an assist as No. 18 Old Lyme defeated No. 15 Housatonic Valley in the Class S first round on Tuesday (this is a corrected version of that account). Ella Curtiss-Reardon also scored for the Wildcats (8-7-3), who will play at No. 2 East Catholic in Thursday’s second round at 2 p.m., while Louisa Raby and Kanon O’Haru added assists and goalie Kaela Hoss made three saves.

    • No. 20 NFA lost dramatic penalty kick shootout against No. 13 Simsbury in the Class LL first round on Tuesday night. After playing 100 minutes of scoreless soccer (80 minutes of regulation, 20 of overtime), Simsbury emerged with a 9-8 win on penalty kicks to reach the second round. Goalie Ava Boenig made six saves during the shootout while her defense of Nikki Shultz, Leah Burchman, Emily Tucker, Jordan Fabry and Alexis Boyer helped keep the Trojans scoreless through regulation and OT.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Third-seeded Fitch rolled to a 4-1 win over No. 14 Killingly in the Class M second round on Tuesday. The Falcons will host No. 6 New Milford in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Olivia Romano scored two goals and added an assist for Fitch while Ashleigh Holmes added a goal and two assists, Izzy Ash scored one goal, Sophie Ash had one assist and goalie Abirel Carey made six saves.

    College honors

    • Endicott College’s Tim Lynch, a freshman from Fitch, was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in men’s soccer. The midfielder made 19 starts for the Gulls and played a key role in helping them allow a league best-tying 0.78 goals against average in conference games. Lynch also scored his first career point with an assist in a 4-1 win over Keene State on Sept. 20.

    • Connecticut College’s Mya Johnson, a senior from Old Lyme was named to the All-New England Small College Athletic Conference first team in women’s soccer while freshman defender Alexa Weiner made the second team. Johnson, who has another year of eligiblity remaining, also made the first team in 2021. She led the Camels and in goals (six) and assists (four).

    • Conn College seniors Augie Djerdjaj and Steve Yeonas were named to the All-NESCAC first team in men’s soccer. Djerdjaj, a three-time All-NESCAC pick and the 2021 NESCAC Player of the Year, led the Camels in goals for the third straight year (six) and finished his career with 22. Yeonas was a first-team selection for the second straight year after scoring four goals and leading Conn with four assists. Both played key roles in 2021 when the Camels won their first NCAA Division III title.
