    H.S. roundup: EL/NT wrestlers beat Ledyard in first dual meet

    Ledyard — The East Lyme/Norwich Tech cooperative program opened the dual portion of its wrestling season with a 46-34 victory over Ledyard on Wednesday.

    The Vikings, who accepted three forfeits, also picked up pins by Jeremiah Irizzary (132 pounds), Kevin Filewich (170), Jackson Hart (220) and Jackson Lin (285). Filewich had the fastest pin for the night for EL/NT in just 26 seconds.

    Anthony Caisse (138) added a major decision for the Vikings.

    The Colonels (1-1) picked up pins from Joseph Crader (126), Ryan Taggart (145) and Brian Johnson (152), and a major decision from Tatianna Irizzary (113).

    In other matches:

    • New London’s Andy Martinez-Soliz (126) earned pin at 5:15 in the final bout as New London edged Waterford 42-39 in the dual meet opener for both schools. The Whalers also picked up pins from Jose Negron-Ortiz (106), Christian Ortiz (160), Kaiden Smith (220) and Henry Santana-Liriano (285) while the Lancers received pins by Brody Ruest (120), Lucas Bourez (138), Lucas Gannotti (145), Javier Gonzalez (152), Devon Powers (160) and Zachary Ruest (182).

    Grasso Tech, which wrestles as a collaborative team that practices with Waterford, had two wrestlers take part against New London with JJ Rivas winning by pin and Luke Thompson losing to Jairo Ruiz of New London by pin.

    • Norwich Free Academy improved to 4-1 with a 49-28 win over Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech in Lebanon. Brock Nowakowski (112), Edward Lavoie (126), Matthew Gil (152), Richard Tavera (160), Zaire Wallace (182) and Brenden Vine (220) had pins for the Wildcats as Nehemiah Czelusniak (138), Cameron Sammarco (170), Vincent Gauvin (195) and Timothy Breaul (285) for the Bulldogs (0-2).

    Boys’ basketball

    • Hillhouse handed New London its first loss, 76-60, in New Haven. Devan Williams led the Whalers (2-1) with 31 and SaVahn Warren added 14.

    • Brendan Osso scored 21 points, including 8-for-10 from the free throw line, as East Lyme won its first game with a 70-59 non-conference win at Morgan in Clinton. Gavin O’Brien added 14 points for the Vikings (1-1) and John Bureau added 10.

    • Caleb Brennan had 20 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks during Grasso Tech’s 86-57 loss to Prince Tech in the CTC on Tuesday night. Charis Johnson added 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals for the Eagles, who were playing their first game of the season.

    • Travis Mangual scored 24 points during Windham’s 67-58 victory over Ledyard in an ECC Division II game on Tuesday night. Peyton Luther led the Colonels (0-3, 0-3) with 19 points and James Green added 16.

    • Woodstock Academy rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to hand Stonington its first loss, 68-62, on Tuesday night. Robbie Scavello had 19 points and four assists to lead the Bears (2-1) while Alex DePerry finished with 16 points and four assists and Luke Lowry and Aaron LoPresto had 13 points apiece.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Angelica Tompkins scored 21 points as St. Bernard cruised to a 41-11 non-conference win over Norwich Tech. Maeve Suprenant added 10 points for the Saints (1-2). Norwich Tech is 1-2.

    • Coventry opened an 18-7 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 45-25 non-conference win over Lyman Memorial on Tuesday night. Jenny Lopez led the Bulldogs (1-3) with 10 points and five steals whilel Phoebe Carpenter added six points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

    • Molly Crabtree scored 22 points as Killingly defeated Waterford 51-28 in an ECC Division II game on Tuesday night. Julia Knowles scored nine points to lead the Lancers (1-2, 0-2).

    Swimming

    • Waterford opened its season with a 92-80 loss to Notre Dame of West Haven. Ethan Jones won the 100 backstroke (1:17.30) and Noah Westkott the 100 breaststroke (1:20.73) for the Lancers, who also captured the 200 medley (2:10.38) and 400 freestyle (4:37.51) relays.
