    Local roundup: Wagner leads Fitch to victory

    Groton -- Mike Wagner scored 11 points to help lift the Fitch High School boys’ basketball team past Ledyard, 38-35, Thursday in the Fitch Holiday Tournament.

    The Falcons improved to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II. They play Smithfield (R.I.), a 51-41 winner over Cheney Tech, at 4 p.m. Friday in the tourney final.

    James Green had 18 points for the Colonels (0-4, 0-4), who face Cheney Tech on Friday.

    In other games:

    • Devan Williams scored 28 points as New London beat Crosby of Waterbury 81-64. SaVahn Warren had 20 points, Da’Shaun Phillips scored 13 and Xavier Goode had 10 points for the Whalers (3-1).

    • Montville won its first game of the season, beating Grasso Tech, 66-59, in the consolation game of the Grasso Tech Winter Tournament. Isaiah Balancier was named to the all-tourney team while Lebron Maurice had 23 points and Aidan Johnson added 17 for Montville (1-3). Charis Johnson had 25 points and Caleb Brennan added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Eagles (0-3).

    • Deondre Bransford had18 points and 12 rebounds for Wheeler in a 55-42 loss to East Haven in the Grasso Tech Winter Tournament championship game. Zane Brewer added 10 points and six rebounds for the Lions (2-3). Angelo D`Amato led East Haven with 20 points.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Zaire Wallace earned outstanding wrestler honors to help power Norwich Free Academy to a 5-0 record in the Glastonbury Duals. The Wildcats beat Glastonbury (39-32), Hand (57-15), Amity (54-27), Newington (48-36) and New Britain (46-29).

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Adrianna Hardison scored 21 points for Ledyard in a 65-57 loss to Valley Regional in the Valley Regional Tournament consolation game. Kieara Kirvan had 14 points and nine rebounds and Monet Augmon added 11 points and six rebounds for the Colonels (0-5).

    • Norwich Free Academy fell to 0-5 with a 57-41 loss to Mercy. Nevaeh Yorke had 12 points and Aislinn Richmond finished with nine points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.

    Men’s basketball

    • Trailing by 15 at halftime, Connecticut College cut the deficit to three points with a minute and a half remaining before fading down the stretch in a 69-61 loss to No. 16 Emory University in the Emory Holiday Classic in Atlanta. Jarron Flynn led the Camels (8-4) with a season-high 18 points and Cam Schainfeld added 14.

    • Cameron Brown scored 18 points for the Coast Guard Academy in a 77-68 loss to SUNY Maritime in the Western Connecticut Tournament. Mitch Shettles had 12 points and Trevor Parks chipped in 11 for the Bears (2-8), who’ve dropped three straight.

    Women’s basketball

    • Connecticut College defeated Maine Maritime, 50-46, in its second game in the Basketball Destinations Classic in Naples, Fla. Jaycie Rojik and Molly Cronin scored 18 points apiece for the Camels (4-7) who avenged a 56-50 loss in the first meeting back on Nov. 11.

    H.S. hockey

    • Owen Pazzaglia (East Lyme) scored two goals and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon Academy) added a pair of assists to lead the Eastern Connecticut Eagles to a 6-4 victory over Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference on Wednesday night. Drew Sager (East Lyme), Gavin Casagrande (Fitch), Wade Larson (East Lyme) and Luke Cramer (Stonington) also had goals for the Eagles (2-2, 1-1), while Kaden Casteel (Waterford), Dylan Makuchowski (Ledyard) and Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) added assists and goalie Cam McCollum (East Lyme) made 22 saves.
