Sun acquire Tiffany Hayes from Atlanta for No. 6 pick in draft
Mohegan — Tiffany Hayes, a two-time national champion at UConn, has been traded to the Connecticut Sun.
The Sun announced Thursday that Hayes has been acquired from the Atlanta Dream for Connecticut’s first-round pick (No. 6 overall) in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
Hayes, a 5-foot-10 guard, has spent her entire WNBA career in Atlanta after being selected No. 14 overall in 2022. She saw limited action in 2022, playing in only 12 games with the Dream due to overseas obligations and a right knee injury, but still averaged 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per-game, including a 31-point performance during a 92-76 win over the eventual WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces.
“We’re super excited to add Tiffany to our roster,” first-year Sun general manager Darius Taylor said in a release. “Tiffany is a two-way played that can score at all three levels and her ability and experience will be welcomed. Tiffany has personified our ‘grit don’t quit’ mentality her entire career and we look forward to her being a part of our organization.”
Hays was a first team All-WNBA selection and All-Defensive second team pick in 2018, and was named to the all-rookie team in 2012 and a WNBA all-star in 2017. She is one of only five active WNBA players with over 3,800 points, 900 rebounds, 650 assists and 300 steals in her career.
Hayes played at UConn from 2008-2012 and was part of the Huskies’ back-to-back undefeated seasons and national championships in 2009 and 2010. She was named to the Big East All-Freshman team in 2009 and the All-Big East first team in 2011.
Hayes is currently a teammate of Sun forward DeWanna Bonner overseas in Turkey for first-place CBK Mersin (16-2), where is is averaging 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per-game.
