    Local roundup: Wheeler boys remain unbeaten in ECC Div. IV

    North Stonington — Deondre Bransford had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 2 steals as Wheeler beat Tourtellotte 70-54 to clinch at least a share of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV boys’ basketball title on Friday.

    Keith Zardies had 17 points and five assists, Kyle Kessler had 12 points, five assists and four steals and Zane Brewer had 13 points and six rebounds and for Wheeler (13-4, 7-0), which can win the division title outright with a win at Lyman Memorial on Tuesday.

    In other games:

    • Jaiden Lopez scored 24 points as Lyman edged Putnam 47-43 in an ECC Division IV game. Kevin Botticello scored nine for Lyman (10-7, 6-1).

    • Evan Merchant scored 25 and Michael Strain added 16 points and 8 rebounds as Griswold topped Stonington, 86-67, to finish unbeaten in ECC Division III. Christian Russell scored 16, Lucas Strain had 10 points and 5 assists and Jeff Souvenance had 15 rebounds for Griswold (16-2, 8-0). Robbie Scovello had 27 points and Luke Lowry scored 15 for the Bears (7-11, 3-4).

    • Travis Mangual Jr. scored 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as Windham beat Waterford 68-54 in an ECC Division II game. Malcolm Hunter had 21 points and Isaiah Mangual added 14 points for Windham. Logan Peabody made 5 three-pointers and scored 22 for the Lancers (6-13, 3-4) and Juan Morel Jr. added 8 points and 14 rebounds.

    • Jack Gahrman had 22 points and six blocks as Norwich Tech beat Vinal Tech 68-50. Josh Hanks added 16 points for the Warriors (5-13) while Malaki Mercado made four 3-pointers and had 12 points.

    • Capital Prep downed Williams, 75-15. Marc Macera scored six for Williams.

    • Fitch improved to 13-4 with a 46-44 non-conference win over Stamford on Thursday night. Kevin Saintville Ravix and Mikey Wagner scored nine points apiece for the Falcons while Peyton Green sparked a late 10-point run with a pair of 3-pointers.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • New London clinched at least a share of the ECC Division II title with a 72-20 win over Waterford. The Whalers (13-6, 6-1) can win the championship outright with a win over Killingly on Saturday. Nalyce Dudley had 27 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals to highlight the win while Serenity Lancaster added 24 points, 17 rebounds, five blocks and five assists, Nyarah Dudley had 10 points and five rebounds and Tally Salls had six points and five assists.

    • Mariette El Khoury scored 12 points as Fitch rallied for a 42-39 overtime victory over Woodstock Academy in an ECC Division I game. Dre’Ana Singleton made three 3-pointers and added nine points for the Falcons (13-7, 4-2).

    • St. Bernard beat Tourtellotte in an ECC Division IV game, 38-14, with Angelica Tompkins scoring 22 with 11 rebounds. Leah Egan had 11 rebounds for the Saints (11-8, 6-2).

    • Bacon Academy completed its regular season with a 59-29 ECC Division II win over Killingly. Freshman Alannah Baehr scored a career-high 19 points for the Bobcats (17-3, 6-2), including three 3-pointers, while Katelyn Novak added 15 points and six rebounds and Cara Shea had nine points, six assists and five steals.

    • Kaylee Gray had 22 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals to lead Norwich Tech to a 60-25 win over Vinal Tech. Autumn Hanks added 18 points for the Warriors (7-11).

    • Windham beat Griswold, 56-42, in an ECC Division III game. Kylie McCormack had 11 points for Griswold (5-13, 2-6) and Kierra Neilson and Faith Russell each scored 10.

    • Phoebe Carpenter had 28 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks as ECC Division IV champion Lyman Memorial completed a perfect run through the division with a 68-36 win over Putnam on Thursday night. Jenny Lopez had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bulldogs (14-5, 8-0) while Juliana Haynes added 14 points and nine rebounds.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Windham has the lead after day one of the ECC tournament. The Whippets, who placed nine wrestlers in the semfinals, finished the day with 93.5 points followed by East Lyme/Norwich Tech (90.5), Killingly (86) and New London (77.5). NFA and Griswold/Wheeler are tied for fifth with 71 points.

    There was one major upset as New London senior Ruben Rivera, the ninth seed at 113 pounds, pinned No. 1 Ian Cathell of Killingly in 2:52 of their quarterfinal match. Other than that, every other No. 1 seed advanced as did all the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

    H.S. indoor track

    • Fitch’s 1,600-meter sprint relay team Charles Tarbox, Nimyel Gamboa, Charles Cabusao and Ryan Dunning of Fitch finished second in the Class L boys’ championship meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in 3:45.65. Xavier won the team title (74 points) and Fitch finished 10th (17.25). Also for the Falcons, Derek Osbourne finished fourth in the pole vault (11 feet), Ryan Dunning was sixth in the 1,000 (2:41.85) and Zayshawn Griffin tied for sixth in the high jump (5-6). In the girls’ meet, Fitch’s Sydney Post tied for fifth (4-10) in the high jump. Windsor won the girls’ team title (82) and Fitch tied for 19th.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • NFA recorded its highest team total of the season to beat Stonington, 135.65-133.14, in the ECC. Trinity Ambruso won the vault (9.3 points) and beam (9.4) and placed first in the all-around for the Wildcats (5-4, 3-4) while Lydia Laskey won bars (8.8) and floor (9.3) and finished second in the all-around (34.6) for the Bears (11-6, 4-4). NFA’s Allison Wojnar was third in the all-around (33.9) and team Sarah Fedeli was fourth with a personal best 33.85.

    Boys’ swimming

    • Jacob Lin won the 500 freestyle (4:57.52) and 100 backstroke (56.50) and swam on two winning relay teams as the Fitch co-op beat Waterford, 88-57, in an ECC meet. The team of Evan Hespeler, Harrison Bied, Miles Mitchell and Lin won the 200 medley relay (1:52.32), John Chirico, Hespeler, Bied and Lin won the 400 freestyle relay (3:51.97) and Magnus Kueblbek, Dominick Zuliani, Colin Westkott and Mitchell won the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.16) for Fitch (6-0, 6-0). Paul Deon Jr. won the 100 butterfly (1:06.65), Ethan Jones won the 100 freestyle (1:01.34) and Noah Westkott won the 100 breastroke (1:11.62) for the Lancers (2-6, 2-4).

    • Ken Chen and Eric Wang each won two individual events for East Lyme in its 87-54 win over NFA in an ECC meet. Chen won the 200 freestyle (1:57.81) and 500 freestyle (5:31.67) for the Vikings (4-2, 4-2) and Wang won the 100 butterfly (1:02.14) and 200 individual medley (2:17.42). Also, Wang teamed with Albert Zhu, Eric Yang and Ryan Zhuang to win the 200 medley relay (1:59.80). Brendan Bezanson won the 100 breaststroke (1:13.24) for the Wildcats (0-6, 0-6) and teamed with Anna Gosselin, Blake Laney and Ethan McMahon to win the 400 freestyle relay. Caleb Blanchard also won the 100 backstroke (1:22.86).

    Women’s basketball

    • Alexa Mustafaj had 23 points and 5 rebounds as Middlebury defeated Conn College, 68-54, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Augusta Dixon had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists for Middlebury (14-10, 5-5). Jaycie Rojik had 20 points, Abby Ilusorio scored 12 and Rebecca Oberman-Levine had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Camels (7-15, 1-8).

    Men’s hockey

    • Hamilton scored four times in the third period to pull away from Conn College for an 8-5 win in a NESCAC game. Fred Allaire had 2 goals and an assist for Hamilton (12-8-1, 10-4-1). Cole Eichler had 2 goals and an assist for the Camels (5-16, 2-13) and John Harrington, Devan Newhook and John Russo all scored.
