    Local roundup: St. Bernard boys surprise No. 9 Windsor 56-47 in ECC/CCC Challenge

    Groton — Cedrick Similien scored 11 of his 19 points in the third quarter as the St. Bernard boys’ basketball team knocked off Windsor 56-47 on Monday in a matchup between two of the top contenders in the CIAC’s Division II at the ECC/CCC Challenge at Fitch.

    The Saints (17-3) clinched the top seed in the Division II tournament with the win.

    Amare Marshall added 11 points and Tyson Wheeler 10 for St. Bernard, which took an 18-10 lead after one quarter.

    Jakeel Martin had 14 points and Quintin Floyd scored 11 for the Warriors (14-6), who are ranked ninth in the GameTimeCT.com Top 10 poll.

    In other games:

    • Jacob Francis had a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Fitch ended its regular season with a 55-42 win over Wethersfield in the ECC/CCC Challenge. Francis also had three blocked shots for the Falcons (16-4) while J.J. Robinson had 15 points, five assists and five steals and Lorenza Rivera had 12 points, five assists and four steals.

    Eastern Connecticut Conference teams won all five games in the two-day event with Norwich Free Academy, Killingly and Windham all defeating CCC teams in Saturday games at Fitch.

    • Zane Brewer had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists as Wheeler finished the regular season with a 78-67 win over Hale-Ray. Deondre Bransford had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, Kyle Kessler had 19 points and 4 rebounds and Keith Zardies had 14 points and 4 steals for the Lions (15-5). Also, Kiyle Montigny had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Mamush Ciccarello scored 38 for the Noises (8-12).

    • Anthony Parker scored a game-high 22 points to lead Xavier past East Lyme 62-48. Adison Brown had 20 points for Xavier (16-4). Michael Timpano had 21 points and Brendan Osso scored 13 for the Vikings (6-14).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Ellington/Tolland defeated Stonington 141.75-132.6 in the regular season finale. Natalie Marshall led a 1-2-3 sweep of the all-round for Ellington with a 36.0 with Lydia Laskey finishing fourth for the Bears (11-7) at 35.3. Laskey was also second on the floor exercise (9.2), third on the balance beam (9.5) and fourth on bars (8.5) while teammates Shay Burnside and Mary Lord tied for fourth on the vault with 8.3 totals.

    College baseball

    • Ohio State erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to defeat UConn 8-6 and split their four-game season-opeing series in Florida. David Smith and Ben Huber hit solo homers for the Huskies (2-2) in the first while Korey Morton and Dominic Freeberger had RBI doubles in the ninth.

    College honors

    • Mitchell College swept the weekly New England College Conference women’s basketball awards as senior guard Dede Stevenson was named Player fo the Week for the second and freshman Kyrsten Lucas was named Rookie of the Week for the second straight week. Stevenson average 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6.5 assists during a 2-0 week while Lucas averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor and from beyound the 3-point line. The Mariners (16-9) are the top seed for the upcoming NECC tournament and semifinal game on Thursday at 6 p.m.

    • Mitchell senior guard Alfonzo Stokes was named NECC Player of the Week in men’s basketball for the fourth time this season. Stokes averaged 25 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.5 steals in two games for the Mariners (21-4), who will host Lesley in the NECC tournament semifinals at Wednesday at 6 p.m.

    • Coast Guard Academy’s Julia Mann was named New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week in women’s basketball. Mann had nine rebounds and a blocked shot against Springfield and five steals and five rebounds against Emerson.
