    H.S. basketball: Top-seeded Saints reach Division I semis with victory over Waterford

    Montville — Top-seeded St. Bernard advanced to the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I semifinals on Thursday night with a 62-44 quarterfinal win over No. 8 Waterford.

    Cedrick Similien scored 18 points and Justin Outlow 15 for the Saints (18-3) will face No. 4 Windham in the last of four semifinal games on Saturday at Waterford at 6 p.m. The Whippets (16-5) rallied from a 25-point deficit in the first half to edge No. 5 Norwich Free Academy 83-82.

    No. 2 New London, a 69-50 winner over No. 7 East Lyme, will face No. 3 Fitch in the first Division I semifinal matchup at 4 p.m. The Falcons defeated No. 6 Woodstock Academy 63-41.

    NFA (10-11) led 34-14 after one quarter, 48-34 at halftime and 64-55 after three quarters. Tony Williams led NFA with 26 points, Armanee Davis scored 14 and Cam’ron Sinvil and Ethan Graham had 10 points each. Windham was led by Travis Mangual Jr. and his 28 points, eight rebounds, four steals and seven assists. Malcolm Hunter had 18 points and three steals, Tyler Mangual had 13 points and Julian Cruz scored 12.

    The Division II semifinals are also set. Top-seeded Griswold will play No. 4 Bacon Academy on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by a game between No. 2 Wheeler and No. 3 Killingly at 1 p.m.

    In other games:

    • Evan Merchant scored 18 points as No. 1 Griswold rolled into the Division II semifinals with a 69-61 win over No. 8 Putnam. Tommy Mattson added 12 points for the Wolverines (18-3) while Jeff Souvenance finished with 11 and Michael Strain had 10 rebounds. Alonzo Henries scored 19 points for Putnam (9-12).

    • Troy Johnson scored a career-high 16 points, including going 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 40 seconds, as No. 4 Bacon Academy advanced to the Division II semis with a 47-38 win over No. 5 Lyman Memorial. The Bobcats (11-10) limited Lyman (12-9) to only 14 points in the second half. Luke Grimord led Bacon with 19 points, including three 3-pointers,while Jaiden Lopez scored 21 for the Bulldogs.

    • Deondre Bransford had 14 points, 13 rebounds and five assists to highlight No. 2 Wheeler’s 63-53 win over No. 7 Montville in the Division II quarters. Zane Brewer added 18 points, eighty rebounds and five assists for the Lions(16-5) while Keith Zardies and Kyle Kessler scored 11 points apiece. Lebron Maurice scored 22 points for Montville (10-12) while Anthony Barbuto finished with 18 and Jace Kobyluck 12.

    • Yianni Baribeau became the first player in program history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds as No. 3 Killingly beat No. 6 Stonington 86-73 to reach the Division II semis. Baribeau finished with 26 ponits, 16 rebounds and eight assists for Killingly (16-5) while Thomas Dreibholz had 29 points and 13 rebounds. Robbie Scavello led Stonington (8-13) with 18 points.
