    Local roundup: Locals advance to State Open wrestling semis

    New Haven — James Linder of Montville and Cameron Sammarco from the Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech co-op are among the four wrestlers who advanced to the CIAC State Open boys’ wrestling semifinals on Friday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    Linder, who won the Class S championship at 138 pounds, is seeded third at that weight. He won by pin and decision to reach Saturday’s semifinals and will face second-seeded Anthony Basile of Xavier. Basile is the Class L champion.

    Sammarco, seeded fourth at 170 having won the Class M title last weekend, won by both major decision and pin. He’ll wrestle top-seeded and Class LL champion Fisher Stites of Newtown in the semifinals.

    Seventh-seeded Jaiden James of Norwich Free Academy upset No. 2 and Class M champion Jerry Hill of Bethel, 7-6, in the quarterfinals at 120. He’ll face No. 6 Reese Titus of Canton in the semifinals.

    Sixth-seeded Naszier Matthews of Fitch pinned No. 3 and Class M champion Drew Schwartz Branford in 3 minutes, 16 seconds in the quarterfinals at 220. He’ll take on second-seeded Yael Garcia-Rodriguez of Windham, the Class S champion, in the semifinals.

    Xavier had six wrestlers advance to the championship semifinals and leads with 96.5 points followed by New Fairfield (66) and New Milford (65.6).

    In the girls’ State Open, Old Lyme’s Hoshea Gemme was one of six local wrestlers to reach the semifinals one week after becoming just the second girl in state history to reach a state divisional final.

    Gemme, seeded second at 114, will wrestle No. 3 Lilliana Fraize of South Windsor in Saturday’s semifinals.

    Other semifinals involving area wrestlers are No. 2 Karla Flores of Montville vs. No. 3 Sybella Landrie of Berlin at 107, No. 2 Linda Holeman of Ledyard vs. No. 3 Madison Atkison of New Britain at 132, No. 3 Jalinda Pontes from the Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech co-op vs. unseeded Marangelie Teixeira of Trumbull at 165, unseeded Kay Gamache from Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech vs. top-seeded Arianna Bellamy of Maloney at 185 and second seeded Kayla Navarro from the Griswold/Wheeler co-op vs. No. 3 Mallory Sefick of St. Paul at 235.

    Ledyard’s Wiltshire honored

    Eastern Connecticut State University senior Collin Wiltshire of Ledyard has been voted as the Little East Conference’s Athlete-of-the-Year in men’s indoor track.

    The former Ledyard standout won the LEC indoor championship in the triple jump last weekend for the second straight season. Seeded first, Wiltshire won the event by over two feet with a mark of 47-0 ¾. He became the first Eastern athlete to win back-to-back LEC triple jump indoor titles.

    In addition to garnering ten points in the triple jump, Wiltshire added two points with a fifth-place finish in the 60 hurdles (9.26) and another point in the long jump with a six-place finish of 21-0.

    In two indoor seasons, Wiltshire has won the triple jump seven times, including all four meets this past winter. In his first season, Wiltshire won the LEC indoor triple jump title with a mark of 46-3 ½ en route being named LEC Male Rookie Field Athlete-of-the-Year – the first time an Eastern male was named a major LEC award-winner in field events.

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • The semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament will be played on Saturday at Waterford High School. All four games will be streamed live via GameDay on www.theday.com

    The Division II tournament games begin the day with No. 3 Killingly playing No. 2 Wheeler at 11 a.m. No. 4 Bacon Academy will play No. 1 Griswold at 1 p.m. The Division I semifinals have No. 3 Fitch playing No. 2 New London at 4 p.m., then No. 4 Windham playing No. 1 St. Bernard at 6 p.m.

    Boys’ hockey

    • Woodstock Academy beat the Eastern Connecticut Eagles, 6-2. Owen Pazzaglia and Drew Sager scored, Zack Pazzaglia had an assist and Cam McCollum had 28 saves for the Eagles (5-12).

    NECC basketball

    • Mitchell College is hosting the New England Collegiate Conference tournament on Saturday. The Mariners are the top seed in both tournaments.

    Mitchell plays No. 2 Eastern Nazarene in the women’s tournament final at 1 p.m. No. 3 New England College plays Mitchell in the men’s tournament final at 4 p.m.

    College baseball

    • Ben Huber scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the 10th inning as UConn rallied to beat Cal Poly, 11-10. Luke Broadhurst had a double, two home runs, three runs and three RBI for UConn (3-2), which scored three times in the ninth to tie the game. David Smith added two hits, including a home run, with two runs and two RBI.

    Men’s hockey

    • Hudson Schandor scored with two minutes remaining in overtime as UConn beat Alaska Anchorage 4-3 on Thursday night. Schandor had two goals and Tristan Fraser and Nick Capone had goals for the Huskies (18-10-3).
