    H.S. roundup: Fitch girls beat Bethel in Class L first round

    Groton — Fitch won its CIAC Class L girls’ basketball tournament opener with a 50-47 win over 20th-seeded Bethel on Monday.

    The No. 13 Falcons (15-8) advance to Thursday’s second round at No. 4 Torrington, which ousted No. 29 East Lyme 52-30 in the first round.

    Mariette El Khoury scored 13 points to lead Fitch while Dre’Ana Singleton added 12 points and Gabby Dimmock 11.

    In other tournament games:

    • Adrianna Hardison had 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals as No. 17 Ledyard defeated No. 16 Brookfield 58-42 in the Class MM first round. Helena Robinson had nine points and 10 rebounds and Kiki Kirvan scored16 points for the Colonels (14-10), who’ll play at top-seeded Northwestern Regional on Thursday in Winsted.

    • Lucy Walker had 18 points and 23 rebounds as No. 24 Waterford routed No. 9 Weaver, 55-14, in a Class MM first round game. Julia Knowles had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Jennie Macca-Barnes had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers (7-15), who’ll play at No. 8 Hand in Thursday’s second round.

    Boys’ basketball

    • A winter storm calling for 4-8 inches of snow to fall across the state Monday night into Tuesday forced the Eastern Connecticut Conference to postpone its tournament championship games on Tuesday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

    The doubleheader is now Wednesday with top-seeded Griswold facing No. 3 Killingly in the Division II final at 6 p.m., followed by the Division I final between No. 2 St. Bernard and No. 2 New London at 8.

    Girls’ fencing

    • Norwich Free Academy captured the epee and foil team championship during the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament on Sunday at Griswold. The Wildcats won epee with 16 points and foil with 13. Ledyard finished second and Fitch third in epee with Fitch taking second and Waterford third in foil.

    NFA’s Inka Pallesvesa won the individual epee honor with teammates Alli Pestey third and Amelia Carney 12th to account for the Wildcats team points while Waterfor d’s Maple Siu (second), Fitch’s Elaina Brookhart (fourth) and Ledyard’s Klare Gieleghem (fifth) rounded out the top five.

    In foil, NFA’s three point scorers were Avery Juhola (second), Carina Montero (fourth) and Kylie Juhola (seventh). St. Bernard’s Zhuning Gao won individual honors with Waterford’s Charlotte Morin placing third and Fitch’s Pia Nicolas finishing fifth.

    Boys’ fencing

    • East Lyme won the team foil title with 12 points and New London captured the epee with 21 during Sunday’s ECC tournament at Griswold. NFA finished second and St. Bernard third in foil with Fitch placing second and Waterford third in epee.

    Benjamin Tan (second), Caleb Haylon (third) and Samuel Yang (seventh) were East Lyme’s point scorers in foil while Wilbur Mack (second), Divine Adekoya (fifth) and Falens Joseph (14th) were New London’s point scorers in epee.

    NFA’s William Weinkoph was the individual champion in foil with St. Bernard’s Ziyan Xu (fourth) and New London’s Ernsly Joseph (fifth) rounding out the top five, while Fitch’s Noah Johnson was the individual champion in epee with Griswold’s Elijah Springer (third) and St. Bernard’s Gianni Torres (fourth) also finishing in the top five.

    Hockey

    • The Eastern Connecticut Eagles ended their regular season with a 6-1 victory over the Housatonic co-op on Sunday night in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference. Owen Pazzaglia had two goals and an assist to lead the Eagles while Zack Pazzaglia and Drew Sager each had one goal and one assist, Nick Rembish and Gavin Casagrande each scored a goal, Jack Cramer had two assists, Ethan LoVetere one assist and goalie Cam McCollum made 24 saves.
