    Local roundup: Bears storm past Clark in NEWMAC tournament

    Worcester, Mass. — The fifth-seeded Coast Guard Academy’s men’s lacrosse team scored 10 goals in the second quarter Tuesday to overcome a three-goal deficit and defeated Clark 18-5 in the opening round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference tournament.

    Caleb Holdridge, a Waterford grad, had four goals and four assists for Coast Guard (6-8), which moved on to Thursday’s semifinal round to face No. 1 Babson. No. 2 Springfield and No. 3 MIT will meet in the other semifinal.

    Ian Feely and Taylor Gustafson added four goals each for the Bears and Dan Lucas made 19 saves in goal to earn the victory.

    Coast Guard trailed 4-1 after the first quarter but took an 11-4 lead at halftime.

    H.S. baseball

    • Dylan Meyer and Brady Borysewicz combined on a no-hitter with seven strikeouts as Fitch beat Ledyard 12-0 in a game that ended in the fifth due to the mercy rule. Meyer also drove in two runs and scored three times while Tommy Rogers had two hits and drove in three runs for Fitch (5-6).

    • Dominic Pontbriant struck out seven over five innings and Lyman Memorial blanked Norwich Free Academy 3-0. Ben Darrow pitched a two-inning save and Nate Cone drove in two runs for Lyman (6-5). NFA is 7-6.

    H.S. softball

    • Anna Dziecinny homered, scored twice and had two RBI as Waterford defeated Woodstock Academy 6-3. Winning pitcher Brielle Kenney struck out six and drove in a run for Waterford (9-3).

    H.S. girls’ golf

    • NFA remained unbeaten with a 217-243 win over Woodstock in an ECC match Monday. Caroline Goderre of NFA (7-0, 6-0) was the medalist with a 47. Madeline Smith shot a 50 for NFA.

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • Ben Godburn shot 48 and Montville defeated Griswold 6-1 in ECC Division III. Montville is 5-2, 3-1. Medalist Cooper Wilson shot 44 for Griswold (2-1-1, 2-1-1).

    • Medalist Josh Lavender shot 44 as Norwich Tech defeated Grasso Tech 191-202 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Grasso is 1-6-1.

    • Medalist Cameron Seiffert shot 34 and Killingly defeated Stonington 7-0 in ECC Division II. Brandon Tavares shot 36 for the Bears (6-3, 3-1).

    • Old Saybrook defeated Old Lyme 165-214 in a match played at Fenwick Golf Course. Alex Chrysoulakis shot a team-best 44 for Old Lyme.

    • East Lyme defeated Fitch 7-0 at Shennecossett Golf Course in ECC Division I. Tyler Moore and Jack Bucko were co-medalists for East Lyme (8-1, 3-0) with scores of 39.

    • East Lyme beat Valley Regional 164-197 Monday in a nonleague match. Tyler Moore and Sebby DeCosta of East Lyme (7-1) shared medalist honors with 38s.

    H.S. boys’ track

    • Jacob Volkerts won the 100 meters and the 200 meters, setting school records in both as Old Lyme split a tri-meet, beating Westbrook 102-40 and falling to Haddam-Killingworth 97.67-51.33. Volkerts took the 100 in 106. seconds and the 200 in 22.6. Dylan Sheehan added wins in the shot put (49-10), discus (142-7) and Gabriel Tooker won the 400 (54.0) for the Wildcats.

    H.S. girls’ track

    • Zoe Eastman-Grossel set a school record in winning the 100 hurdles in 16.4 seconds and Chase Gilbert won the 800 in a school record-setting time of 2:17.2 as Old Lyme split a tri-meet. The Wildcats defeated Westbrook 92-31 and lost to Haddam-Killingworth 87.67-61.33. Freshman Margaret Thuma took the discus and javelin for Old Lyme.
