    Local roundup: Avery Point advances to East District final

    Rochester, N.Y. — UConn Avery Point beat Monroe Community College 11-7 to sweep the best-of-three Sub District baseball tournament on Saturday.

    The Pointers advance to next weekend’s East District tournament, with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Division II World Series.

    Vance Ward (two RBI) and Tyler Rice had two hits each and Jaden Echevarria (four RBI) and Andrew Lozier homered for Avery Point. Keegan Daigle (5-1) was the winning pitcher.

    In other games:

    • Luke Broadhurst hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as No. 9 UConn rallied to beat Butler 7-6 in a Big East Conference game. Butler scored twice in the top of the 9th to take a 6-5 lead.

    Ben Huber drew a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the ninth. Drew Kron pinch-ran for him and Broadhurst hit the game-winner. Paul Tammaro was 3-for-4 and Huber and Broadhurst had two hits each for the Huskies (38-11, 13-3).

    H.S. softball

    • Grace DuBrava had three hits and drove in four runs as East Lyme beat Immaculate 15-1 in five innings. DuBrava had a triple and a home run. Ava Korineck (double) and winning pitcher Abby Robinson had two hits each for the Vikings (9-7). Robinson pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

    • No. 4 Masuk beat NFA 4-2. Emma McAvoy homered for NFA (12-5), Leah Manke doubled and Zosia Hospod drove in a run.

    • Sophia Torreso pitched a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts as No. 6 Bristol Central beat Waterford 4-1. Melanie Martin scored a run and Lyra DeAngelis had an RBI for Waterford (12-6).

    H.S. girls’ crew

    • East Lyme’s first varsity boat finished second in a six-team race on Lake Waramaug in New Preston at the Kent Invitational Regatta. Kent School won and the Vikings beat Hotchkiss, Sacred Heart Academy, Simsbury and Farmington. First boat rowers for East Lyme are stroke, Sarah Long, Darby Farragher, Gabby Gotschall, Sandra Kirvelevicius, Fiona Samuelson, Katie Whewell, Ave Mauri and Sara Muller. The second, third and novice boats all also finished second.

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Montville swept doubles and beat Killingly 5-2 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III match. The teams of Danny Zhong-Ryan Yang, Nathan Dhillon-Jack Bowman and Zach Thomas-Ryan Hochdorfer all won in straight sets. Montville (6-5, 3-1) got singles wins from Jack Giurleo and Brendan Duhamel.

    College track

    • Connecticut College teams competed at the All-New England Championships at Northeastern. Erica MacSweeney finished seventh in the triple jump at 11.41 meters and got the Camels their only two team points. The men had 13 points, including eight from Matt Carter and his second-place finish in the 10K (30:10.4). The other five points came from Chris Koskinen’s fourth in the pole vault, breaking his school record by clearing 4.95 meters on his second attempt.
