ECC tournament roundup: Montville girls capture ECC Div. III-IV track and field meet
Plainfield — Montville used its superior depth to outlast Lyman Memorial and win the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III-IV girls’ track and field championship on Monday at Plainfield High School.
The Wolves finished with 182 points to 152. Lyman won six individual events and all three relays and Montville won five events, but Montville athletes scored points and every event to overtake the Bulldogs. St. Bernard finished third with 72.
Maya Suarez was a double winner for the Wolves, winning the 1,600-meter race in 5:34.83 and the 3,200 in 12:40.44. Montville’s other individual champions were Isabel Northrop in the 100 hurdles (16.55 seconds), Hannah Suarez in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and Chloe Hammer in the javelin (88-10).
Emily McKelvey and Leah Comeroski had big days for Lyman. McKelvey won the 100 dash (12.61) and 300 hurdles (47.57) while Comeroski added wins in the 200 (26.42) and triple jump (34-5.5). Ella Caplet won the 400 (1:00.80) and Gabriella Dinisoe won the pole vault (10-0) for the Bulldogs.
In addition, Dinisoe, Caplet and Comeroski joined Jenny Lopez on the winning 4x100 relay (50:86) for Lyman while McKelvey, Caplet, Sylvie Hiltz and Allysa Judd were the winning 4x400 team (4:21.78) and Hiltz, Judd, Hazel DeLucia and Magdalana Carpenter won the 4x800 relay (10:43.83).
St. Bernard’s Payton Lowe also won two events, capturing the shot put (33-8.5) and discus (117-01).
In the boys’ meet, Windham cruised to the team title with 174 points with St. Bernard finishing second (114) and Griswold (86) third. The Whippets won five events and had a double winner in Alexander Lee, who captured the shot put (44-1) and discus (134-7).
Griswold’s Michael Strain and St. Bernard’s Kolby Quinn also had big days. Strain captured the 800 (1:59.30) and 1,600 (4:38.76), then joined Jackson Collins, Jacob Strain and Maxwell Brown to win the 4x800 relay (8:49.87).
Quinn also won two events, claiming the long jump (20-11) and triple jump (43.1.50), while teammate Colin Britner won the 3,200 (10:38.06).
Boys’ tennis
• Fifth-seeded Andres Sardar of Fitch beat No. 4 Matt Turrisi of Stonington 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the ECC tournament, joining the top three seeds in Tuesday’s singles semifinals at East Lyme High School at 3 p.m.
Sardar will play his teammate, top-seeded and defending champion Will Albrikes, in the semis while No. 2 Brady O’Neil of Stonington will face No. 3 Jiarui Peng of East Lyme in the other semifinal match. Albrikes, O’Neil and Peng all advanced with straight set wins in the quarterfinals.
The top four doubles teams also advanced to the semifinals, with the No. 4 team of Fitch’s Morgan Fisher-Nick Sousa outlasting No. 5 Sam Lund-Josh Lord 7-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarters. Fisher and Sousa will play top-seeded Conrad Tobiassen-Tucker Callahan of Stonington in one semifinal while No. 2 Sebastian Fieldsend-Malloch Allison of Ledyard will play No. 3 Rohan Purohit-Rohun Boopathy of East Lyme in the other semi.
The finals will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Stonington.
Girls’ tennis
• Stonington will have three of the four doubles semifinalists after all three teams won quarterfinal matches on their home court. The Bears’ top-seeded team of Katya Snegovskikh-Lauren Buckley will face No. 4 Ada Ellis-Izzy Ash of Fitch in one semifinal while the other will be an all-Stonington matchup of No. 3 Misha and Marina Lewandowski and No. 7 Gwen McGugan-Angelina Williams. McGugan-Williams upset No. 2 Hazel Siu-Sophia Sit of Waterford 6-1, 6-2 in the quarters.
The top four singles players cruised into the semis. Defending champion and top seed Sarah Hage of Waterford will face No. 4 Mara Wolff and No. 2 Grace Duggan of Stonington will play No. 3 Julia Mielguj of Fitch. All semifinal matches will be played on Tuesday at Stonington at 3 p.m., along with the finals on Wednesday.
Girls’ lacrosse
• Katie Graham had five goals and two assists as sixth-seeded Bacon Academy defeated No. 3 Ledyard 16-6 in the first round. The Bobcats (13-4) will play top-seeded East Lyme in Tuesday’s semifinals at 5 p.m. at Ledyard. The Vikings received a first-round bye.
Marissa Nudd added five goals and an assist for Bacon while Maddox Burton had three goals and three assists, Anna LeGault two goals and two assists, Neely Hart one goal and one assist, Megan Swanke and Camryn Grasso each had an assist and goalie Kayla Hall made six saves.
Helena Robinson and Maddie McLeod scored two goals each for the Colonels (14-3) while Jess English and Tatianna Irazarry each had one goal, Mackenzie Boyer had an assist and goalie Lorelai England made 13 saves, including the 250th of her career.
No. 5 Waterford defeated No. 4 Wheeler 24-8 in the other first round game and will play No. 2 Stonington in Tuesday’s semifinals following the East Lyme-Bacon game at 7:15 p.m.
