    H.S. baseball: Waterford rolls in Class M tournament opener

    Waterford —Waterford scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and went on to beat No. 18 O’Brien Tech 8-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the CIAC Class M baseball tournament.

    The No. 15 Lancers (14-9) host No. 31 Suffield in the second round on Wednesday. Anthony Jessuck pitched a five-hitter for the win and Quinn Speller was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and scored twice for Waterford.

    In other games:

    • Dominic Pontbriant pitched No. 10 Lyman Memorial to an 8-4 win over No. 23 Sports Sciences in Class S. Lyman plays at No. 7 Plainfield in the second round on Wednesday. Pontbriant struck out 11 with four walks over 6.1 innings, allowing five hits. Mike Incontro had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs for the Bulldogs (15-8) and teammate Alex Ortiz had two hits and drove in two runs.

    • Owen Snurkowski drove in six runs and Santiago Rodriguez had four RBI as No. 6 Old Lyme beat No. 27 HMTCA 17-2 in Class S. The Wildcats host No. 22 Old Saybrook in the second round on Wednesday. Snurkowski was 4-for-4 and scored three runs and Rodriguez was 3-for-3. Casey Hurtgen earned the win, striking out eight over three innings. Jordan Hanes and Grady Lacourciere (three RBI) also had three hits each for the Wildcats.

    • Alex Dreyfus pitched six strong innings as No. 2 East Lyme beat No. 31 Ellis Tech in Class L. The Vikings host No. 15 North Haven in the second round on Wednesday. Dreyfus allowed four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and two walks. The Vikings (21-3) led 6-0 after two innings. Liam Cochrane had two hits and four RBI, John Bureau had two hits and scored twice and Connor Tukey drove in three runs for East Lyme.

    • No. 2 St. Bernard beat No. 31 Computer Science 15-1 in Class S. The Saints host No. 15 East Granby in the second round on Wednesday. Zion Fraser and Colin O’Leary each had two hits, two RBI and scored twice for the Saints (19-4) and Desmond Powers had a run-scoring triple.

    • No. 3 Guilford beat No. 30 New London in Class L, rallying after the Whalers took a 4-0 lead. Isaiah Plaza had three hits, scored twice and stole two bases and Eddie Torres singled and doubled for New London (8-14).

    • No. 20 Fitch lost to No. 13 Hillhouse-Career 3-2 in Class L. Dylan Meyer pitched a four-hitter for the Falcons (13-11), who surrendered three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dom Zuliani hit a solo home run and Isaac Frank had a double for Fitch.

    • No. 17 New Fairfield beat No. 16 Stonington 12-0 in Class M. Jace Wolfradt and Dylan Cimini, who doubled, had two hits each for the Bears (12-10).

    • No. 9 Wheeler lost to No. 24 Coginchaug 3-0 in Class S. Bradin Anderson took the loss for the Lions (14-8), allowing five hits and two runs over five innings with seven strikeouts.
