    H.S. roundup: Old Lyme’s Sheehan, Volkerts win two events each in Class S track

    New Britain — Old Lyme’s Dylan Sheehan and Jacob Volkerts won a pair of events each during Tuesday’s CIAC Class S track and field championships at Willow Brook Park.

    Sheehan, a senior, captured the discus with a throw of 161 feet, 5 inches, then came back later in the meet to win the shot put with a throw of 49-11.5.

    Jacob Volkerts, a junior, won both sprinting events, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.02 seconds and adding his second win in the 200 in 22.63 seconds.

    Sheehan and Volkerts helped the Wildcats finish third in the team standings with 43 points behind Bloomfield (115) and Derby (71).

    In the girls’ meet, Old Lyme had a pair of champions. Freshman Chase Gilbert won the 3,200 in 10:44.22 after anchoring the winning 4x800 relay (9:44.32) that included Maggie Morgado, Liv Powers and Kathleen Walsh.

    Bloomfield won the team title with a whopping 167.25 points with Somers second (58), Old Saybrook third (56.25) and Old Lyme fouirth (56).

    Girls’ lacrosse

    • Top-seeded East Lyme began play in the Class M tournament with an easy 19-6 victory over No. 16 Foran in the first round. The Vikings (18-1) will host No. 9 Farmington, an 8-6 winner over No. 8 Ellington, in Friday’s quarterfinals at 5 p.m.

    Gianna DiLoreto scored five goals for East Lyme while Dani Bruno added three goals and three assists, Meg Nagle had three goals and two assists, Izzy Pazzaglia scored three goals, Abbie Belleville had two goals and two assists, Alanna Benoit scored twice, Penelope Lawlor had a goal and goalie Gigi Franco made nine saves.

    • Fifth-seeded Stonington advanced to the Class S quarterfinals with an 11-6 win over No. 12 North Branford. Emma Logel scored six goals for the Bears (17-2), who will visit No. 4 Canton on Friday at 5 p.m. Canton knocked off No. 13 Old Lyme 12-4. Abby Mayorga added two goals for Stonington while Shay Burnside, Nora Walsh and Lillian Loughlean each had a goal.

    • Seventh-seeded Bacon Academy won its first state tournament game in program history with a 13-11 win over No. 10 Tolland in Class S.K Kate Graham and Marissa Nudd scored four goals apiece for the Bobcats (14-5), who play at No. 2 New Fairfield in Friday’s quarterfinals. Maddox Burton added two goals and three assists for Bacon while Anna LeGault had a goal and four assists, Megan Swanked had a goal and two assists, Cameryn Grasso had one goal and one assist and goaie Kayla Hall made nine saves.

    • No. 13 Old Lyme was eliminated by No. 4 Canton in Class S. Gretchen Burgess, Alexis Antonellis, Sydney Goulding and Kelly Sheehan each scored a goal for the Wildcats, who finish 12-7, while Ella Curtiss Reardon had two assists.

    • No. 2 Hand defeated No. 15 Ledyard 15-9 in Class M despite eight goals by the Colonels’ Madde McLeod. Helena Robinson also scored for Ledyard, which finishes 15-4, and goalie Lorelai England made 12 saves.

    • No. 3 Sacred Heart outlasted No. 14 Montville 15-12 in Class S. Lily Tomczik had seveng oals and three assists for the Wolves, who finish 9-9, while Kate Bowman scored twice, Reagan Buscetto, Karissa Hochdorfer and Emma Terris each scored once and goalie Kate Koning made 10 saves.

    Softball

    • No. 7 St. Joseph ousted No. 26 East Lyme in the Class L first round with a 12-0 victory in six innings. Arleen McKiernan had a double for the Vikings, who finish 9-12.

    • No. 21 Ledyard lost to No. 12 Guilford 10-1 in Class L. Madi Miller had a pair of hits for the Colonels, who finish 11-11, and Maegan Miller drove in Ledyard’s lone run.

    • No. 23 RHAM struck for three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings to defeat No. 10 Stonington 6-0 in Class M. Melanie Verbridge and Madi Allard each had a hit and pitcher Lindsey Houle had a pair of strikeouts for the Bears, who finish 17-6.

    • No. 14 Notre Dame of Fairfield ended Wheeler’s season with a 12-0 win over the No. 19 Lions in a Class S game that ended after six innings. Abby Butremovic and Marissa Perkins had two hits apiece for Wheeler, which finishes 11-10.

    Boys’ golf

    • Norwich Tech captured the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament title at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron, finishing with a medal score of 353 to easily defeate runner-up Wilcox Tech (398). Josh Lavender led the Warriors with an 81 followed by Jack Gahrman (86), Derek Cobb (91), Josh James (95) and Zack Lamitie (103).
