    Mitchell’s Dougie DelaCruz named Region 2 Position Player of the Year

    New London — Mitchell College outfielder Dougie DelaCruz was named Region 2 Position Player of the year by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Tuesday.

    The senior from Montville, who was named New England Collegiate Conference Player of the Year earlier in the month, became the first player in program history to earn an ABCA/Rawlings Division III regional player of the year award.

    DelaCruz was also named to the All-Region first team by ABCA/Rawlings one of five Mitchell players to garner regional honors. DelaCruz and sophomore first baseman Bo Yaworski were named to the first team, catcher Matt Falk, infielder Lelo Martinez of New London and outfielder Owen Robbins of East Lyme made the second team and pitcher Ryan Solimine and infielder Angel Galindez were named to the third team.

    All first-team selections are eligible for All-America honors.

    DelaCruz, who started in all 43 games for the Mariners and became Mitchell’s career leader in home runs, batted .430 with 60 RBI, 57 runs scored, 24 doubles, seven home runs and six triples. The Mariners went 33-10 and reached the NCAA Division III New London Regional final.

    In addition, five players were named to the All-Region 2 team by D3baseball.com. DelaCruz was named to the first team, Solimine made the second team and Falk, Robbins and Yaworski were selected to the third team.
