Local roundup: Thomas earns Player of the Month for the Sun, as they get ready to host Seattle

Mohegan — Alyssa Thomas attributes all her successes this season as “part of the grind.”

“I want to win. We’re still trying to bring a championship here,” Thomas, an All-Star forward for the Connecticut Sun, said recently. “Everyone overlooks us but we continue to grind it out each and every day and we have what it takes.”

Thomas, who recorded three triple-doubles in June, including those in back-to-back games on June 25 and 27, was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month on Wednesday. It is the third such honor in her 10-year career.

The Sun (12-5) meet the Seattle Storm (4-12) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mohegan Sun Arena (NBC Sports Boston), with former UConn All-American Gabby Williams set to make her season debut for Seattle.

In June, Thomas averaged 14.6 points, 9.5 rebounds, 9.3 assists and 2.4 steals per game as the Sun went 8-3. She became the WNBA’s career leader in regular-season triple-doubles with five and has seven overall.

Thomas had 13 points, 15 rebounds and 12 assists in an 85-79 win over the Storm on June 20, 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in a 96-72 victory over the Chicago Sky on June 25 and 11 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a loss to the New York Liberty on June 27.

Thomas set a franchise record for most assists in a single game with 16 in the Sun’s win over the Lynx on June 1. On June 4 against Dallas, she became the franchise leader in free throws made (693) and moved into third overall in games played in Connecticut history (246).

On June 15 against Atlanta, Thomas eclipsed 3,000 career-points, becoming one of four players in franchise history to achieve the feat. And on June 25 against Chicago, Thomas became the Sun franchise leader in rebounds (1,822), passing Taj McWilliams-Franklin who had held the record for 17 years (1,814).

“Seeing her every day, you know why she’s as good as she is,” Sun first-year head coach Stephanie White said of Thomas. “Oftentimes, if you don’t see her every day, you watch her and you’re like, ‘How in the heck does she continue to put up those numbers?’

“It’s because No. 1, she’s a relentless worker and competitor; she does not get outworked. She is a tremendous competitor. Her will to win is second to none. Her accountability, not just to her teammates but her accountability to herself and how she’s going to compete every day and the standard that she holds herself to is, again, second to none. And her basketball IQ is off the charts.”

The Sun are led by DeWanna Bonner with 17.7 points per game and Thomas with 14.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.0 assists. The Storm are led by Jewell Loyd’s 25.8 points per game.
