    Local roundup: Waterford beats West Hartford 8-0 in Legion zone crossover tournament

    Waterford — Waterford maintained a half-game lead over Willimantic in the Zone 6 race with an 8-0 victory over West Hartford in the Stars and Stripes tournament at Waterford HIgh School.

    Waterford is 11-2 in zone play while Willimantic, which beat Ellington 13-1, is 10-2. Waterford hosts East Hartford/Manchester on Sunday at 2 p.m. The crossover games between Zones 6 and 3 count in the overall standings this season.

    Against West Hartford, Martin Light pitched a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts for Waterford while Anthony Jessuck had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs and Cam McGugan, Brian Ingraham and Joe Basso added two hits apiece.

    On Friday, Ethan Mireault allowed just two hits and struck out six as Waterford defeated Norwich 10-0 in five innings. Zion Fraser went 3-for-4 to lead the offense while Jackson Long had a pair of hits and McGugan had an RBI double.

    • Jay Allmer (Seton Hall) picked up his seventh save of the season while lowering his ERA to 0.75 as the Mystic Schooners defeated the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks 3-2 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Dodd Stadium. Allmer pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts for the Schooners (14-10), Mike Bello (Auburn) was 2-for-3 and starter Anthony DeFabbia (Stetson) allowed only one run and four hits over five innings to earn the win.

    State Babe Ruth (13-15)

    • Waterford advanced to the winners’ bracket final of the Connecticut Babe Ruth (13-15) tournament with a 9-4 win over Shelton. Waterford will play host Norwalk on Sunday at 4 p.m. for a trip to the championship round. Nick Ingraham had three hits for Waterford while Gavin Polcaro and Zaydin Martinez had two hits apiece and Martinez and Ingraham combined to strike out eight on the mound.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Waterford rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat host Trumbull 2-1 in the opening round of the Connecticut Babe Ruth (14) tournament. Waterford will play Bethel in a winners’ bracket game at 4 p.m. Sunday. Colby Sheehan started the rally with a leadoff single, advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw and scored the tying run on a base hit by Cole Peckham. Peckham moved to second on the throw home and scored the winning run when Kian Gordy singled on a 3-2 count. Winning pitcher Matthew Shampine pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts.

    State Babe Ruth (13)

    • Waterford opened play in the Connecticut Babe Ruth (13) tournament with a 15-0 win over Bethel in four innings at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford. Jamison Waggoner threw a perfect game with eight strikeouts while Jameson Barlow went 3-for-3 with a double, Chad Nolda had two hits and Quinn Robinson hit an inside-the-park home run. Waterford will play Shelton on Sunday at 4 p.m. in a winners’ bracket game.

    Section 3 LL softball (10-12)

    • District 10 champion Stonington was eliminated from the Connecticut Section 3 Little League softball (10-12) tournament on Friday night with a 6-4 loss to District 9 champion Madison in Killingworth. Madison will play District 7 champ Rocky Hill for the sectional title on Monday.
