    Local roundup: Rashleigh leads Bears past Colonels

    Ledyard — Iliana Rashleigh scored two goals Thursday and the Stonington High School girls’ soccer team opened its 2023 season with a 3-0 win over Ledyard.

    Maya Terwilliger also scored for the Bears and goalkeeper Payton Stone posted the shutout.

    In other games:

    • Lilah Hart scored two goals as East Lyme opened its season with a 7-0 win over Ellington. Elise Jorgensen, Lacey Lee Keramidas, Riddhi Venkatesh, Lilly Antonino and Kaylee Knapp also scored for the Vikings.

    • Sadie Daniewicz scored three goals as NFA beat Hamden 7-1. Chloe Green scored twice, Jordan Fabry and Brooke Bolles had a goal and an assist each, Ava Boenig made 11 saves and Leah Burchman and Alex Tabilas had assists for the Wildcats.

    • Killingly defeated New London 8-0. Italia Salls made 29 saves for the Whalers.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Peyton Luther had two goals and an assist as Ledyard beat NFA 4-0. Sebby Fieldsend and Cam Weber also scored, Paulo Templeton made three saves and Ryan Hernandez, Owen O’Brien and Ben Crowe had assists for the Colonels. Colton Hawkins made 10 saves for NFA.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Killingly defeated New London 25-21, 25-16, 23-26, 25-15. Serenity Lancaster had 11 points and eight kills for the Whalers, while Nyarah Dudley had 17 digs, Raelyn Lopez 13 digs and five assists and Cashel Jones 12 digs and six assists.

    • Wheeler defeated Grasso Tech, 25-16, 25-24, 28-26. Alandra Johnson had seven points and 11 kills for the Eagles, while Jada Muirhead had eight kills.

    • Old Lyme defeated Morgan, 25-14, 25-12, 25-20. Peighton Andrews had nine kills, Grace Phaneuf 22 assists and Sydney Siefken had five aces and five digs for the Wildcats.

    • Ledyard defeated Montville 25-16, 25-19, 14-25 and 26-24. Kylee Gill had eight aces and six digs, Bella Schweitzer four kills, and Sarah Banach had four digs and three kills for the Colonels. Mackenzie Payne had three aces, Anna Rubucis had four blocks and Zoie Farrar six kills for the Wolves.

    • Evelina Klyukin had 14 kills and 30 digs as NFA beat Bacon Academy 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13. Stella Hogan had 24 digs and nine kills and Faustine Canales Arrieta had 16 assists and 21 digs for NFA.

    Women’s soccer

    • Former Old Lyme standout Mya Johnson had two goals and an assist as Connecticut College beat the University of Saint Joseph 6-0 in its opener. Morgan Plouffe, Jamie Scarpantonio, Lauren Anastos and Zola Alcaro also scored for the Camels.

    Williams signs with Mercury

    • The three-time Phoenix Mercury announced that they have signed guard Christyn Williams to a rest-of-season contract.

    Williams, a 5-11 guard out of UConn, was selected 14th overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2022 WNBA Draft before suffering a season-ending knee injury prior to the start of the season.

    Williams averaged 14.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists during her senior season at UConn. She was named the 2022 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner, awarded to the nation’s top shooting guard, and the 2022 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Williams, a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, left UConn ranked 15th in school history in career points (1,850).
