    H.S. roundup: NFA boys win team title at Stratton Brook cross country invitational

    Simsbury — Sawyer Barile finished third as Norwich Free Academy captured the boys’ Large Division championship at the Stratton Brook Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Stratton Brook State Park.

    Barile finished in 17 minutes, 46 seconds over the 5K course for the Wildcats, who won the team title with 41 points, 13 better than second-place Avon.

    NFA’s five point-scorers all finished in the top 20 with Patrick Croughwell finished fifth in 18:03, Jesse Croteau sixth in 18:07, Robinson Meuse eighth in 18:26 and Owen Muench 19th in 19:29.

    In the girls’ Large race, NFA’s Karina was the individual winner in 22:00 as the Wildcats finished sixth with 121 points. Meadow Brown (23rd, 26:21), Keegan Levine (29th, 27:14) and Sharon Liu (30th, 27:29) also cracked the top 30 for NFA.

    In the girls’ Small race, Lyman Memorial’s Hazel DeLucia was third in 21:41 as the Bulldogs finished third in the team race with 104 points. Sylvie Hiltz finished 16th (23:53), Kayla Osga 28th (25:30) and Luci Gardella 29th (25:31) for Lyman.

    Football

    • Jayden Carter ran for a pair of touchdowns as Stonington scored the game’s first 31 points and cruised to a 31-20 season-opening win over Northwest Catholic in West Hartford. Carter scored on runs of 11 and 7 yards for the Bears, who led 24-0 at halftime, while Patrick McGugan (3 yards) and Charlie Worsdale (48 yards) added TD runs and Ethan Mahony kicked a 39-yard field goal and had made three extra points. McGugan added a two-point conversion after his TD run.

    • Hector Aponte had a pair of rushing touchdowns while Arian Castillo scored offensive and defensive TDs as Montville opened its season with a 26-6 win over Lewis Mills in a Connecticut Football Alliance game. The start of the game was delayed an hour by lightning. Aponte rushed for 60 yards to lead the Wolves while Castillo caught a 30-yard TD pass from Aidan Johnson and return an interception 65 yards for another TD.

    Boys’ soccer

    • Jose Pacheco score twice as St. Bernard scored six goals in the first half and cruised to an 8-0 win over Tourtellotte in its season and ECC Division IV opener. Ben Syphrett, Luke Brannegan, Connor McWilliams and Christian Lopez also scored for the Saints.

    • New London opened its season with a 6-3 win over Lyman Memorial in an ECC Division III game. Stouvenly Dortelus scored twice and Niko Churis had a goal and two assists to lead the Whalers. Yovany Duenas Sánchez, Erlin Almendarez and Schneider Casales also had goals and Eric Castro and Jorge Almendarez had assists.

    • Colby Cowan scored two goals in the final 10 minutes as Montville rallied for a 2-2 overtime draw with Killingly in its season opener. Goalie Adonis Santiago made two saves for the Wolves.

    • Harrison Avery had two goals and one assist as Wheeler opened its season with a 6-1 ECC Division IV win over Putnam. Wyatt Hayes added one goal and one assist, Keiran Boscoe had two assists and Dave Levanto, Jack Dowry and Drew Dearly eached scored a goal for the Lions.

    Girls’ soccer

    • NFA’s Jordan Fabry converted a direct kick from 42 yards out with 9:30 remaining to rally the Wildcats to a 1-1 draw with Bacon Academy. Alyssa Blanchette had given the Bobcats (0-0-1) a 1-0 lead just 2:35 into the second half. Ava Boenig made 13 saves in goal for NFA (1-0-1) while Arianna Pennington stopped five shots for Bacon, which held a 15-9 edge in shots.

    • Sydney Cook and Nicole each had a goal and an assist as Montville opened its season with a 4-1 win over Plainfield. Jada Cheung and Avery Bouchey also scored for the Wolves, Abby Daniewicz and Katie Koning added assists and goalies Katie Myjak and Sienna Gressly cominbed for five saves.

    Volleyball

    • East Lyme beat Coventry 3-1 in its season opener, rallying for a 24-26, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-19 victory. Abby Parulis had 18 kills for the Vikings while Skylar Bell added 30 digs and six aces, Bella Diep had 35 assists and Mia Williamson 10 digs.

    • NFA improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 3-1 win over Norwich Tech. Game scores were 24-14, 25-11, 19-25 and 25-12. Freshman setter Savannah Guernsey had 13 assists, three aces and three digs for the Wildcats while Lindsey Silva had 15 digs and one ace and Petra Berry added seven kills and three blocks. Taylor Roberts had three aces, three kills and 10 digs for the Warriors and Abby Ulrich added one ace, five kills and 10 digs.

    • Lyman Memorial won its debut under new coach Steve Stonoha with a 25-17, 25-27, 25-15 and 25-15 win over Ledyard. Jenny Lopez had nine aces and 10 assists to lead the Bulldogs while Isabela Shuckerow added six kills, Rown LaFleur 10 digs and Erica Arpin 10 digs. Emily Peckham had 16 assists and three aces for the Colonels (1-1) while Kyle Gill had five aces and Sarah Banach six kills.

    • Mackenzie Payne had 19 assists and four aces to highlight Montville’s 3-1 win over Killingly. Zoie Farrar added nine kills and two digs for the Wolves (1-1) and Alyna Ovalles had six digs.

    • Cromwell defeated New London 25-27, 26-24, 25-14 and 25-10 in a non-league game. Serenity Lancaster had four aces, eight serve points, 14 kills, four blocks and 12 digs for the Whalers (0-2) while Jadelise Garrett added two aces and four kills, Raelyn Lopez 25 digs and six assists, Cashel Jones two aces, 12 points, five assists and eight digs, Mercedes Pratts 15 digs and Willianis Rivera 13 digs.

    Field hockey

    • Lotta Kuenning scored two goals and Emma Bransfield added two assists as Westbrook/Old Lyme defeated Killingly 3-0. Meg Bach also scored for W/OL, Brooke Ouellette had an assist and goalie Abby Demers made two saves as the Knights had a 14-2 edge in shots.

    • Izzy Ash scored three goals as Fitch opened its season with a 5-0 win over Chariho (R.I.) on Friday. Sammi Knauer and Ada Ellis also scored and Esme Carlebach made four saves for the Falcons.
