    H.S. cross country: Montville boys open ECC Div. III season by edging rival St. Bernard 28-29

    Montville — Montville’s depth proved to be the difference as the Wolves opened their Eastern Connecticut Division III boys’ cross country season with a 28-29 victory over St. Bernard on Tuesday.

    Montville also beat Killingly 16-47 in a non-conference meet and the Saints also beat Killingly 18-31.

    St. Bernard had four runners place among the top seven, led by overall winner Colin Britner, who finished the 2.55-mile course in 15 minutes, 1 second.

    The Wolves, meanwhile, had four in the top eight but its other three runners finished ahead of St. Bernard’s No. 5 runner, allowing Montville to pull out the narrow victory.

    Lucas Dellacono finished third (15:51), Maddox Roan sixth (16:47) and Rad Tanksley seventh (16:59) for the Saints while Jach Brehler placed second for the Wolves (15:30) and was followed by Alexander Joseph in fourth (16:16), Nathan Dhillon in fifth (16:22) and Kyler Newer in eighth (17:00).

    In other meets:

    • Ledyard edged Fitch 24-31 and defeated host Bacon Academy 15-50 in an ECC Division II meet. Fitch’s Ryan Dunning was the overall winner in 17:27 and teammate Kaiden Chandler was fifth in 18:03. The Colonels were paced by Hayden Baber in second (17:32) followed by Jack Hill (17:47) and Gabriel Huff (17:48). Boden Paul finished in 19:50 to lead Bacon.

    • Norwich Free Academy swept the top seven places in defeating host Stonington and Windham 15-50. The Bears beat Windham 21-34 in an ECC Division III meet. Jesse Croteau won the race for the Wildcats in 17:42 and was followed teammates Sawyer Barile, Patrick Croughwell, Robinson Meuse, Nick DeBartolo, Anthony DeBartolo and Owen Muench. Brady deCastro placed eighth to lead Stonington and Collin Scherer was 11th.

    • Griswold defeated Waterford 18-37 in an ECC Division II meet but lost to Woodstock Academy 22-35 at Hopevilel State Park. Woodstock also beat Woodstock 15-44. Woodstock’s Christian Menounos was the individual winner in 15:54 while Griswold’s Tycen LaBelle finished second in 15:46 with teammates Max Brown, Dylan Bailey and Sean Silva placing 6-8, respectively. Titus Olson led the Lancers by finishing 10th in 20:03.

    • East Lyme swept the top seven places and defeated Lyman Memorial 15-50 at Rocky Neck State Park. The Vikings’ Sam Leone won in 17:30 over the 5,000-meter course and was followed by teammates Mason Hintze (17:51), Andrew Carrier (17:59), Darius Kirvelevicius (18:10), Maddox Grillo-Smith (18:41), Beck Schultz (18:43) and Dylan Johnson (18:47). Lyman’s Kellen Johnson finished eighth in 19:02.

    • Wheeler opened its season by sweeping ECC Division IV oppoents New London, Putnam and Tourtellotte by 15-50 scores as they other team teams couldn’t field enough runners. The Lions had the top three finishers with Jayson Krysicwicz winning in 20:57 followed by Cam Conway (20:58) and Trevor Scarchilli (20:59). The Whalers were led by Gabriel Frommer, who finished fourth in 21:33.

    Girls

    • Stonington opened its season by defeated Windham 15-50 in an ECC Division III meet and NFA 26-29. NFA also beat Windham 15-50. Stonington’s Peyton Vanderstreet won on her home course in 21:06, edging NFA’s Karina Chan by three seconds. The Wildcats’ Helen Muench finsished third followed by the Bears’ Addison Labbe and Molly Musselman.

    • Wheeler opened its season with a 15-50 win over New London in an ECC Division IV meet. Sophie Zichichi (22:25), Carissa Browne (24:49) and Kyle Melia (25:12) led a 1-2-3 finish for the Lions while Jaidelis Rivera was fourth for the Whalers (27:32) and Olivia Crane-Benjamin was fifth (27:34).

    • Ledyard swept the top three spots during a 15-50 win over Fitch and a 19-42 win over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division II meet. Bacon defeated Fitch 23-34. Kate Littler was the individual winner for the Colonels in 21:23 and was followed by teammates Ellas Stephenson (22:05) and Josephine Withbroe (22:12). Melinda McKenzie was fourth in 23:02 and Lorelei Romasanta was fifth in 23:19 for Bacon while Alaina Campbell was Fitch’s top finisher in 24:59.

    • St. Bernard’s Helena Coury and Mia Klewin finished 1-2 as the Saints earned 15-50 wins over Montville and Killingly. Killingly also beat Montville 15-50. Coury finished in 18:40.3 and Klewin in 18:40.9 for St. Bernard while Sage Gressly finished third for the Wolves (19:29) and the Saints’ Martha Hammond was fourth (20:40).

    East Lyme outlasted Lyman Memorial 27-30 at Rocky Neck State Park. Lyman’s Hazel DeLucia was the individual winner in 20:24 over the 5,000-meter course followed by the Vikings’ Aranza Torres (21:08) and Maya D’Aquila (22:08). The Bulldogs’ Sylvie Hiltz (22:12) and Kayla Osga (23:30) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, followed by East Lyme’s Rachel Quadrato (23:36) and Izzy Paggioli (23:39).
