    College roundup: Conn women upset No. 7 Williams 2-0 for first NESCAC victory

    New London — Connecticut College knocked No. 7 Williams from the unbeaten ranks while earning their first New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory of the season with a 2-0 win over the Ephs at Freeman Field.

    Katelyn Hardwick headed home a cross from Ella Gazo with less than 10 minutes left in the first half to give the Camels (5-5, 1-5) a 1-0 lead.

    Gazo also assisted on an insurance goal by Clare Mulvihill in the final eight minutes.

    Goalie Sarah Hall made three saves for the Camels to earn the shutout. Conn held an 11-9 edge in shots against Williams (7-1-2, 4-1-1).

    Men’s soccer

    • Conn College remained unbeaten by battling Williams to a 1-1 draw in the NESCAC. The Camels (7-0-3, 3-0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Jack Kelesoglu’s header deflected off a Williams defender and into the net. Williams (6-2-2, 2-2-2) tied things on a goal by Andrew Coelho in the 62nd minute. Peter Silvester made two saves for Conn, which held a 14-6 edge in shots.

    • Coast Guard Academy earned its first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Clark. Aki Freeman, Miguel Penella and Andres Villasana scored goals for the Bears (2-3-5, 1-1-2), with the final goal an own goal. Michah Messner and Aidan Miles added assists.

    Football

    • Coast Guard turned the ball over three times in a 38-7 loss to Salve Regina in the NEWMAC. Salve (5-1, 3-0), outgained the Bears 538-239 in total yards and led 38-0 before Coast Guard’s Harrison Hensley scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a 99-yard drive with 11 minutes, 54 seconds to play.

    Jake Stack was 19-for-29 for 242 yards and two touchdowns passing and Thomas Cea Jr. carried 16 times for 100 yards and three TDs for Salve. Fitch High School graduate Josh Letellier made 3 catches for 41 yards.

    Joey Armentrout finished 16-for-27 passing for 145 yards and two interceptions for Coast Guard (3-3, 1-2), Hensley rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries and James Patz had five catches for 60 yards. Ryan Vigo and freshman cornerback Jael Cuellar each had eight tackles to lead the Coast Guard defense.

    The Bears have a bye next week before coming home to face Norwich on Oct. 21, which will serve as Coast Guard’s Homecoming Game.

    Volleyball

    • Hamilton cruised to a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Conn College. Riley Lord had eight kills for the Camels (8-7, 2-5) while Rae Wartelle finished with six kills and Emma Wheeler had three kills.

    Field hockey

    • Natalia Nolan scored twice as No. 9 Williams rolled to a 4-1 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. The Ephs are 6-2, 3-1. Elektra Rodger scored for the Camels (2-7, 0-6) and goalie Liz Winemaster made 10 saves.

    Cross country

    • Conn College’s Brendan Mellitt was fourth in the men’s race in a season-best time of 25:43.43 as the Camels finished 13th in a field of 24 teams at the 27th annual James Earley Invitational at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. Conn finished with 328 points.

    The Conn women were 12th in the field of 25, finishing with 353.

    Several of Conn’s top runners sat out the race in preparation for next weekend’s home meet. Those who did compete got a preview of the course that will host the NCAA Mideast Regional on Nov. 11.

    Other top finishers for Conn in the 8K men’s race were Nicholas DeMarco, 57th in 27:31.95; Kevin Lieue, 92nd in 28:26.80; Jonathan Fossel, 93rd in 28:27.48 and Deem Quinn, 108th in 29:04.73.

    In the 6K women’s race, Conn’s Phoebe Wood led the way, finishing 58th place in a career-best 25:16.85. Molly Donovan was 71st in 25:41.35, Katherine Keating 74th in 25:46.24, Charlotte Maturo 85th in 26:11.34 and Caitlin Bird 87th in 26:13.41.
