Waterford — KinKade Rubino and Kiyle Montigny each had three touchdowns and Aiden Peltier returned an interception for a score with 2 minutes, 33 seconds remaining Friday night as the Griswold/Wheeler high school football team won a high-scoring game against Waterford, 54-33, in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II.

That makes Griswold 6-1 overall, 4-1 in Division II headed to next week’s game at Stonington (6-1, 4-1). Windham is undefeated in the division at 5-0.

In the second half, Waterford got a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jax Higgins, then recovered an onside kick. The Lancers (1-6, 1-4) scored on a 1-yard run by Noah Westkott to pull within a touchdown at 39-33.

Rubino, however, responded with his third touchdown run of the night to push the lead back to 47-33 and Peltier put the finishing touches on the win.

Montigny had two touchdown runs and caught a TD pass from Luke Cassidy. Deondre Bransford also had a touchdown reception. Waterford’s Parker Spencer had a touchdown run and Spencer and Brady Sutman each caught a pass for a score from Higgins.

H.S. swimming

• Julia Morcos and Grace Xu each won an individual event and contributed to two relay victories as East Lyme topped Ledyard/St. Bernard 99-75 in the ECC. Morcos took the 500 freestyle in 5:54.09 and Xu won the 100 backstroke in 1:08.16. Makenna Harms, Hannah Socha, Molly Newton, Jennifer Park, Ella Pape, Kristin Timpano and Ruby Thoms also played a role in the Vikings’ sweep of the three relays. Thelma Grogan won the 50 freestyle (28.24) and the 100 breaststroke (1:21.12) for Ledyard/St. Bernard (2-9, 1-7). East Lyme is 6-2, 6-2.

• Sophia Pacheco won the 200 free (2:18:14) and 100 free (1:04.63) to help the Fitch co-op beat Waterford 96-73. Kaitlyn Kumpf added a victory in the 100 fly (1:15.83) and helped on the winning 200 medley (2:18.59) and 400 free (4:48.52) relay teams for the Falcons (9-1, 8-0 ECC). Victoria Matyakubov captured the 1-meter dive with a 160.60 score for the Lancers (5-4, 4-4).

H.S. field hockey

• Paige Goebel had two goals and an assist for Stonington in a 6-0 victory over Killingly in the ECC. Goebel began the scoring for the Bears (12-2-1, 11-0-1) in the first quarter on an assist by Anna Lettiere and Stonington made it 2-0 at the half on a goal by Shay Burnside. Olivia Duhig, Goebel, Marina Lewandowski and Misha Lewandowski added goals in the second half and Hailey Allard finished with two saves for the shutout.

H.S. boys’ soccer

• Baker Katko had six saves in goal for Williams in a 4-0 loss to Watkinson. Williams is 3-9-1.

• Louis Hawkins scored twice in NFA’s 3-0 victory Thursday over Fitch in ECC Division I. Erick Portillo added a goal and Remington Walsh had two assists for NFA (9-6-1, 4-2). Fitch is 3-10-2, 2-4 in the division.

H.S. girls’ soccer

• Kelsey Dunnack scored off a corner kick from fellow senior Allyssa Judd in the second half to cut the deficit, but Lyman Memorial could get no closer in a 2-1 nonconference loss to East Hampton. Phoebe Carpenter had six saves for the Bulldogs (12-3-1).

On Thursday, Griswold’s Hannah Service made 16 saves and Lyman’s Carpenter made three as the teams tied 0-0 after two overtimes in ECC Division III.

• Junior Marlee Anselmi scored Williams’ first five goals — all assisted by senior Skylar Frost — in the Blues’ 7-0 win over Watkinson. Anselmi also assisted on Frost’s goal in the second half and Frost added a penalty kick to wrap up the scoring. It was Senior Day, and Williams (8-3-1) recognized its team manager, Abby Potts, and seven senior players: Olivia Boris, Jaidyn Cote, Zaela Crespo, Frost, Katelyn Harvey, Scarlet Kane and Maria Morant.

• Kylee Morrison scored both goals for Grasso Tech in a 5-2 loss Thursday to Wilcox Tech in the CTC. Grasso is 7-8 overall and in the conference.

H.S. volleyball

• Montville swept Morgan 3-0 in a nonconference match. Alyna Ovalles had 15 digs, three aces and two assists for the Wolves, who finished the regular season at 17-3. Teammates Mackenzie Payne (18 assists, three aces), Zoie Farrar (seven kills, seven digs, two aces) and Anika Nhem (four kills) also contributed to the victory.

ECC tournaments begin

• ECC tournament season kicks off today with first-round games in boys’ and girls’ soccer, each of which feature a bracket for Division I and Division II.

The top two teams in each divisional bracket received a bye and will advance to the semifinals.

Saturday’s games are:

Division I boys: No. 5 Stonington at No. 4 Waterford, 3 p.m.; and No. 6 Windham at No. 3 NFA, 4:30 p.m.

Division II boys: No. 5 Killingly at No. 4 Wheeler; and No. 6 Plainfield at No. 3 New London.

Division I girls: No. 4 Bacon vs. No. 5 Woodstock at Lyman Memorial, 10:30 a.m.; and No. 6 Killingly at No. 3 East Lyme, 11 a.m.

Division II girls: No. 5 St. Bernard at No. 4 Windham, 11 a.m.; and No. 6 Montville at No. 3 Plainfield, 10 a.m.

College volleyball

• Riley Lord had six kills to lead Conn College in a 3-0 loss to Tufts in its New England Small College Athletic Conference regular-season finale. Emma Wheeler added five kills and three blocks for the Camels (11-11, 2-8), who lost 25-16, 25-10, 25-13.

College men’s basketball

• UConn’s Donovan Clingan was named to the 20-player watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The goes annually to the top center in Division I men's basketball.

Clingan's inclusion comes after the 7-foot-2 big man played in all 39 games for UConn a season ago, teaming with All-American Adama Sanogo to give the Huskies a devastating 1-2 punch in the post. In 13 minutes per game, Clingan averaged 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks, shooting 65.5%.

He was a two-time Big East Freshman of the Week and a selection to the league's All-Freshman team.
