    Local roundup: Lyman wins in OT to advance to S girls’ soccer quarters

    Lebanon — Haley Cardinali scored three minutes into the first overtime period as Lyman Memorial beat No. 12 Coventry 2-1 in the second round of the CIAC Class S girls’ soccer tournament on Wednesday.

    The No. 5 Bulldogs will host No. 13 Old Lyme in a quarterfinal on Friday. Emily McKelvey had a goal, Becca Ziegler and Cardinali had assists and Phoebe Carpenter made five saves for Lyman (15-3-1).

    In other games:

    • Old Lyme beat No. 4 Morgan 2-1 in the second round of the Class S tournament, winning 3-2 on penalty kicks. The No. 13 Wildcats lost to Morgan 5-0 in the Shoreline Conference tournament final on Friday.

    The Wildcats’ Ella Curtiss-Reardon scored in the second half to tie the game at 1-1 off a Kate Walsh corner kick. Old Lyme goalie Olivia Kelly made a save then made the game-winning penalty kick. Aggie Hunt and Walsh also converted penalty kicks. Kelly made 16 saves for Old Lyme (11-6-3).

    • NFA beat No. 12 Trumbull 3-1 in the second round of the Class LL tournament. The No. 5 Wildcats play at No. 4 Notre Dame of Fairfield in the quarterfinals on Friday, NFA’s first appearance in the quarters. Hayleigh Young, Sadie Daniewicz and Brooke Bolles scored goals and Ava Boenig made five saves for NFA (16-2-2).

    • Top seed Williams School advanced to the Housatonic Valley Athletic League tournament final with a 3-0 win over No. 5 Harvey School in the semifinals. The Blues will host Watkinson School in Saturday’s final at 1 p.m. Marlee Anselmi scored a pair of second-half goals for the Blues (10-3-1) ands Sarah Harvey scored in the first half. Skylar Frost assisted on all three goals.

    • Waterford beat No. 20 Northwestern Regional 5-0 in the second round of the Class M tournament. The No. 4 Lancers host No. 5 Lewis Mills in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Allison Cioci scored two goals and Adyson Wiseman had a pair of assists. Paige Jessuck, Anna Waddington and Payton Smith scored goals, Sadie Tiven and Lea Arnold has assists and Victoria Sturm made four saves for her 13th shutout for the Lancers (16-2-2). The win was the 100th at Waterford for head coach Chris Ghiglia and assistant Joe Mooney.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Montville beat No. 15 Lyman Memorial 3-1 in the second round of the Class S tournament. The No. 2 Wolves host No. 7 Valley Regional in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. Montville won 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17.

    Zoie Farrar had nine kills, Mackenzie Payne had 20 assists and three aces and Keira Paradis had eight kills for Montville (21-3). Isabella Shuckerow had 24 digs, Erica Arpin had 23 digs and Jenny Lopez had eight kills for Lyman (10-13).

    • Old Lyme lost to No. 6 Hale-Ray 3-0 in the second round of the Class S tournament. The Wildcats lost 21-25, 15-25, 23-25. Grace Phaneuf had 20 assists and 13 digs, Peighton Andrews had nine kills and 13 digs, Sydney Siefken had 17 digs and Maya LeQuire had six kills for the No. 22 Wildcats (10-13).

    Women’s basketball

    • Mitchell College opened its season with a 77-34 win over Mount Holyoke in a nonleague game. Jurmia Dumas had 26 points, Yasmine Santos had 20 points and 14 rebounds, Inonda Peterson had 13 points and New London’s Jamya Beddoe scored 12.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • Montville lost to No. 30 Notre Dame of Fairfield 2-1 in the first round of the Class M tournament on Tuesday. Colby Cowan scored the goal, Madden Brown had an assist and Adonis Santiago made 10 saves for the No. 3 Wolves (14-3-2).

    College honors

    • Four players from the Connecticut College men’s soccer team were honored by the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Matt Scoffone was a first-team pick and teammates Marco Cerezo, Jake Creus and Peter Silvester made the second team.

    Scoffone is second on the team in scoring with 15 points and tied for the team lead with seven goals, Cerezo has helped Conn’s defense record seven shutouts, Creus is tied for the team lead with seven goals and has three assists for a team-high 17 points.

    Silvester has started every game in goal for Conn, compiling an 11-1-5 record and making 37 saves with seven shuotuts. The Camels open up play in the NCAA Div. III tournament on Friday against Denison at 6:30 p.m. in Lancaster, Pa.

    • The Conn College women’s soccer team had two players honored by the NESCAC. Mya Johnson, the former Old Lyme all-stater, was a first-team pick for the third straight year and Claire Mulvihill made the second team.

    Johnson led the Camels in scoring with 15 points on six goals and three assists. She finished her career with 80 points on 33 goals and 14 assists, to rank second all-time in goals and points and program history. Mulvihill finishing third on the team in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist.
