    Staples 21, West Haven 20 (Class LL)

    • Max Maurillo’s tackle on a potential two-point conversion with 1:15 remaining allowed top-seeded Staples to hold on to the victory over No. 3 West Haven.

    It was the fourth CIAC title for Staples (12-1), which was ranked first in the GameTimeCT Top 10 poll, while West Haven (10-3) was ranked seventh.

    West Haven led 14-7 at halftime on a 9-yard pass from Nick Conlan to Armani Reid but Caleb Smith scored two straight touchdowns on runs of 2 and 10 yards, giving him three on the night, for Staples.

    West Haven scored its final touchdown on a 2-yard pass from Conlan to Reid, but the two-point conversion pass was stopped short.

    New Canaan 28, Darien 21 (Class L)

    Ryan Barnard's late forced fumble and fumble recovery led to Alexander Benevento's go-ahead touchdown as second-seeded New Canaan topped No. 8 seed Darien at Rentschler Field.

    New Canaan tied the game on a 12-yard pass from Lawrence Robinson to William Langford with 5:03 left to play.

    Darien had plenty of time to drive for a potential game-winning field goal but Barnard came off the edge to jar the ball free from Darien quarterback Benjamin Rolapp. Barnard also recovered the fumble to set up the Rams in the red zone.

    Benvento also caught a 24-yard TD pass from Robinson, as New Canaan (12-1) won its 14th state title. Charles Thom had a pair of 1-yard scoring runs for Darien (9-4).

    North Haven 21, Wilton 0 (Class MM)

    • North Haven’s defensive effort, with two big plays in the fourth quarter, gave the No. 5 Nighthawks their second straight state championship at Central Connecticut State University.

    Holding on to a seven-point lead, North Haven’s Carmen Thompson grabbed an interception at the Wilton 38-yard-line, which set up quarterback Joey Mastroianni for a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Bernardo to make it 14-0 with 11:18 remaining.

    North Haven (11-2) scored its final touchdown thanks to another defensive play, as Michael Moran forced a fumble, scooped up by his twin brother Brian and returned for a touchdown with 10:03 to play.

    Francis Hagerty rushed for 77 yards and passed for 93 for No. 3 Wilton (10-3).

    Hand 57, Rockville 20 (Class M)

    • Senior running back Aidan Dolan ran for a game-high 269 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 1 Daniel Hand to a win over Rockville at Central Connecticut State.

    Dolan exceeded 2,000 yards rushing for the season in the victory and threw his first touchdown pass as the Tigers won the 14th state championship in school history and their first since 2018.

    Dolan completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Owen Preskar in the fourth quarter, the first of his career. With 57 points, Hand (12-1) scored the most points in a CIAC championship game, breaking their previous best mark of 54 against Maloney in 2018.

    No. 2 Rockville (11-2) won their previous two CIAC tournament games by one point to advance to the final.

    Barlow 21, Watertown 20 (Class SS)

    • Jack Gilbert scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and No. 7 Barlow came from behind to edge No. 8 Watertown 21-20 to capture its second straight Class SS title,

    Watertown (7-6) took a 14-7 lead at halftime after a 60-yard run by Aiden Arline and a 2-yard score by Brayden Gambee, but Barlow (9-4) tied things at 14 on a 17-yard run by Luke Bishop and the second TD run by Gilbert, following a Watertown turnover, gave the Falcons the lead for good.

    Watertown scored on a 12-yard run by Arline with 1:38 to play but the two-point conversion failed.

    Bloomfield 42, Cromwell/Portland 20 (Class S)

    • Davien Kerr scored three touchdowns and twin brother Davion added two as No. 2 Bloomfield topped No. 4 Cromwell/Portland at Rentschler Field, the 10th state championship for the Warhawks.

    Cromwell/Portland (10-3) struck first on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jess Elfeich to Emeka Yearwood before Bloomfield quarterback Darrien Foster connected with Davien Kerr on touchdown passes of 10 and 24 yards.

    The game was tied at 20-20 after a third-quarter touchdown by Cromwell/Portland’s Osi Yearwood, but Bloomfield (11-1) scored 22 unanswered points, getting a 22-yard touchdown run from Davion Kerr (21 carries, 173 yards), a fumble recovery in the end zone from Za’Kwi Kimber and 1-yard scoring run from Davion Kerr.
