    Local roundup: Gray (26) leads St. Bernard boys to win over Waterford

    Waterford — Amyre Gray had 26 points in St. Bernard’s 67-39 victory over Waterford in a high school boys’ basketball game Thursday night.

    St. Bernard, ranked fourth in the latest GameTimeCT Top 10 poll, led 31-25 at halftime before outscoring the Lancers 21-4 in the third quarter to put the game away.

    Parker Spencer had 19 points for Waterford (1-1) and Juan Morel Jr. had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

    St. Bernard is 2-1.

    In other games:

    • East Lyme defeated Ledyard 54-39 to improve to 2-1. Peyton Luther had 14 points for Ledyard (1-2).

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Jenny Lopez had 13 points and freshman Makayla Piaseczny 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, six steals and four blocks for Lyman Memorial in a 42-21 victory over Wheeler in ECC Division IV. Hayden Bresnan finished with nine points for Wheeler (1-2, 1-2). Lyman is 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the division.

    • Angelica Tompkins scored 23 points to lead St. Bernard to a victory in its ECC Division IV opener, topping Tourtellotte 43-31. Zanfina Gjonbalaj added 13 points for the Saints (1-2, 1-0).

    • Olivia Luurtsema had 17 points for Norwich Tech in a 41-14 victory over Cheney Tech. Maya Stimson and Lillian Luurtsema each contributed eight points for Norwich Tech (2-2).

    • Melanie Verbridge had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Stonington in a 59-38 loss at Ellington. Presley Smith added nine points for the Bears (2-2).

    H.S. wrestling

    • Gianno Pearson (120 pounds), Anthony Caisse (150) and Brayden Soleau (190) won by pin for East Lyme/Norwich Tech in a 46-28 victory over Bacon Academy on Wednesday. Lincoln Carlson also earned a win by major decision for the Vikings (2-0) at 175. Xavier Gudelski won by pin at 138 for Bacon (0-2), as did Logan Dimitri at 157 and Carson Brown at 165.

    • Kian Gordy won a 7-5 decision in overtime in the 120-pound match and Waterford beat Fitch 55-17 Wednesday. Riley Montana (113), Aidan Piccolo (126), Dustin Powers (132), Lucas Bourez (165), Devon Powers (175) and Braeden Sollima (215) had pins for Waterford (2-0) and Lucas Gannotti (150), Adam Balfour (157) and Zachary Ruest (190) won by decision. Fitch’s Marco Ursini won by pin at 106 and Lance Stewart took a tech fall at 144. In addition, Waterford’s Devon Powers decisioned Stonington’s Cooper Light 9-3.

    • New London got pins from Jose Negron-Ortiz at 113, Masyn Smith at 120, Andy Martinez-Soliz at 126, Jeremy Ruiz at 132, Jaquis Lee at 150, Christian Ortiz at 157, Trevin Robledo-Thompson at 165 and Kaiden Smith at 215 in a 69-12 victory Wednesday over Montville. James Linder picked up a pin at 144 for Montville (0-2) and Chloe Leonardo had a pin at 113. New London is 2-0.

    • Norwich Free Academy edged Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech 38-37 Wednesday to remain unbeaten at 2-0. Landon Herdic (106), Jackson Sorel (126), John Dexter (144), Dylan Vanegas (150) and Naim Wallace (157) had pins for NFA to go with a tech fall from Dugan Marsh at 138 and a 6-0 decision from Zaire Wallace at 215. Lyman got pins from Calvin Sammarco (113), James Hiltz (165), Cameron Sammarco (175), Jason Thoma (190) and Timothy Breault (285). Hunter Sanchez won a major decision at 120 for Lyman (1-1) and Lucas Judd won by decision at 132.

    H.S. boys’ hockey

    • Woodstock Academy’s Don Sousa scored in the first minute of both the first and second periods and completed the hat trick in the third to lead Woodstock Academy to a 6-3 victory over the Eastern Connecticut Eagles on Wednesday. Drew Sager (East Lyme), Ethan LoVetere (Bacon Academy) and Dakota Fox (East Lyme) all scored for the Eagles (2-1 overall and in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference) and Wyatt Verbridge had an assist. Tyler Fields (NFA) made 34 saves.

    H.S. girls’ hockey

    • East Lyme’s Mia Williamson and Wheeler’s Sophia Gouveia each scored for the Woodstock Academy co-op in a 5-4 loss to the Amity co-op in overtime Wednesday. Ellary Sampson and Maci Corradi of Woodstock each added a goal and an assist for the Centaurs (2-4) and Riley Faber had two assists.

    UConn, Rice to play in football

    • The UConn football program has entered into an agreement to play two games against Rice during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The Huskies will host Rice on Oct. 26, 2024, and make a return trip to Rice on Oct. 11, 2025. UConn and Rice faced off for the first time this past fall, a 38-31 Huskies win on the road in Houston. The full 2024 UConn football schedule will be released in mid-January.
