    Local roundup: Handler (East Lyme), Wadecki (NFA) are ECC’s new coaching hires

    East Lyme — Jeff Handler is the new head coach of the East Lyme High School girls’ golf program, athletic director Kevin Marcoux announced Friday.

    A physical education teacher at East Lyme and long-time assistant coach for baseball and boys’ soccer coach, Handler takes over a team that returns all five starters from an Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament championship team.

    “I am going to miss the baseball coaching staff and players tremendously but am extremely excited to take on this new challenge of coaching the girls’ golf team,” Handler said in a release. “I look forward to working with the team and seeing their success on and off the course.”

    • Jeff Wadecki was named the new girls’ track and field coach at Norwich Free Academy. He is an experienced coach, serving as assistant coach for the boys’ cross country program and he also works with the boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams and previously assisted with the outdoor teams.

    “This team has many returning scorers and should be in the mix to have a competitive season at the conference and state level,“ said Wadecki, a Ledyard graduate, in a release. ”I’m grateful for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with the student-athletes.“

    • East Lyme/NFA earned its first win of the season by defeating Waterford/Ledyard 95-75 in an ECC meet. Connor Foerster won the 200 freestyle (2:00.88) and 500 freestyle (5:29.91) to pace the Vikings (1-5, 1-3), who also received individual wins from Ryan Zhuang in the 100 freestyle (55.21), Mingwen Duan in the 100 backstroke (1:02.32) and Albert Zhu in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.73).

    Alexander Startz took first in the 200 IM (2:12) and 100 butterfly (58.73) for the Lancers (1-5, 1-3) while Nikolas Vajdos won the 50 freestyle (24.52) and Ethan Jones placed first in the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 139.75.

    H.S. riflery

    • Grasso Tech avenged a season-opening loss by beating Vinal Tech 905-860 on Thursday. Logan Gurchik led the Eagles with a score of 184 (out of 200). Gavin Jameson and Chase Beattie each shot 181, Aaron Trotochaud had 180 and Colt Burgess had a 179. Gurchik and Beattie both had perfect scores in prone for Grasso (4-1).

    Men’s basketball

    • Connecticut College raced to a 20-point halftime lead and went on to beat Bowdoin College 74-59 in New England Small College Athletic Conference action. RJ Casey scored a career-high 28 points and David Murray added 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Camels (14-5, 4-1), who are in third place in the league.

    Women’s basketball

    • Conn College suffered its sixth straight loss, dropping a 57-42 decision at Bowdoin in NESCAC action. Addi Hunter had 10 points and four rebounds for the Camels (5-13, 0-5). Bowdoin, which resides in first place, is 19-1, 6-0.

    College track

    • Paige Phillips was the Coast Guard Academy’s top performer at the UMass Lowell’s Riverhawk Invite, winning the 5,000 meters in a career-best 17:25.81. It also was the second-best time in that event in program history. Lauren Mellon had a personal-best time of 18:30.75 in the 5,000, placing 12th.

    In the 800, CGA’s Sidney Triepke finished ninth in a career-best 2:16.37, which is also the third-fastest time in program history. Grace Flynn finished the 400 in 1:00.79 and joined Triepke, Riley Thorburn and Makenna Topp on the 4x400 relay team that crossed the line in 4:05.21.

    Allie Wildsmith took third in the high jump in 5 feet, 4.25 inches and Tara Jensen finished the 60-meter hurdles in 10.50.

    Women’s hockey

    • Kylie McCarthy scored Conn College’s only goal in a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Middlebury in the NESCAC.
