    Local roundup: Falcons finish strong, Goode scores 29 in win over Waterford

    Waterford — Xavier Goode finished with 29 points, including four 3-point field goals, as the Fitch High School boys’ basketball team rallied past Waterford 72-69 Monday with a big fourth quarter.

    Waterford led 36-27 at halftime after scoring 28 points in the second quarter and 53-47 after three quarters before Fitch outscored the Lancers 25-16 in the final frame.

    Malakhi Saab added 14 points and JJ Robinson 12 for Fitch (11-5).

    Jordi Cassar had 25 points and three steals for Waterford (7-8) and Parker Spencer had 11 points, four assists and two steals. Juan Morel finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.

    In other games:

    • Jadiel Thomas had 10 points and Marc Macera eight in Williams School’s 66-30 loss to Rocky Hill (R.I.). Williams is 4-10.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Jennie Macca Barnes had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Waterford past East Lyme 48-45. Sarah Davidson added 14 points for Waterford (6-12) and Sadie Tiven had five points, four assists and two steals. Lindsay Todd finished with 12 points for East Lyme (1-18).

    • Jordyn Bay-Kent finished with 17 points in Norwich Free Academy’s 71-36 victory over Lyman Memorial. Emily Orcutt added 14 and Selia Atchinson 13 for NFA (12-7). Jenny Lopez had 18 points for Lyman (11-6).

    • Ava Roth finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and four assists in Old Lyme’s 42-38 loss to Westbrook. In addition, Sybil Neary had eight points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats (6-10).

    • Zanafina Gjonbalay had 20 points for St. Bernard in a 54-36 win over Fishers Island. Gemma Tonucci also chipped in with 10 points and Vanessa Colla had seven points and 12 rebounds for the Saints (10-7).

    • Audrey DeFillippo led Tourtellotte with 17 points in a 34-24 win over Norwich Tech. Abby Ulrich finished with eight points and nine rebounds for Norwich Tech (5-10).

    Local college honors

    • UConn’s Aaliayah Edwards was named Player of the Week and KK Arnold Freshman of the Week as the Huskies swept the weekly Big East women’s basketball awards. Edwards, who picked up the honor for the second time this season, averaged 27.5 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 63.6% in wins last week against Villanova and St. John’s. Edwards had a career-high 33 points Sunday against St. John’s with 13 rebounds and four steals. Arnold earned the Big East honor for the fifth time, tying her with teammate Ashlynn Shade. She averaged 9.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game last week.

    • Mitchell College freshman guard Elijah Miller was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week in men’s basketball for the first time in his career. Miller averaged a double-double last week with 14 points, 10 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists per game, helping lead the Mariners to a 2-0 record including league victories over Anna Maria and New England College. Miller shot 46.2% overall, 50% from 3-point range.
