    Around the region

    Stephon Castle earned his UConn record seventh Big East freshman of the week honor on Monday. He’s won the award six out of the last seven weeks. In two men’s basketball games last week, he averaged 11 points, three rebounds and shot 58.8% from the field.

    Alex Karaban was the previous program record holder, receiving six weekly freshman honors last season.

    Graduate guard Cam Spencer was named to the Big East weekly honor roll after averaging 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.

    In other UConn men’s basketball news, the Huskies remained atop of the Associated Press top 25 poll for the fifth straight week, the program’s longest stretch at No. 1 since the 2003-04 season.

    • UConn senior forward Aaliyah Edwards made the Big East weekly honor roll for women’s basketball after averaging 19 points and 13.5 rebounds in two games.

    • Wheaton College freshman Lauren Hinckley (East Lyme) finished fourth in the triple jump in 10.15 meters at the school’s invitational on Jan. 27.

    • St. Michael’s College freshman Kennedy Holsapple (East Lyme) earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honors for the fall season. Student-athletes that had a cumulative 3.25 grade-point average and finished among the top 30% at the NCAA regional championship were eligible to make the list.

    • Freshman Julia Knowles (Waterford) had a team-high four assists for the Eastern Connecticut State University women’s basketball in a 70-55 win over Vermont State on Saturday. Knowles has appeared in 23 games, starting 18. She is averaging 4.0 points and 3.9 rebounds while appearing in 23 games, starting 18.

    • Graduate forward Taina Pagan (New London) had 10 points and three rebounds for the Post University women’s basketball team in an 89-69 win over Wilmington (Del.) University on Saturday. On the season, Pagan is averaging 9.2 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds in a starting role.

    • Junior Tyrone Mack (Montville) was Central Connecticut State University’s top finisher in the shot put on Saturday at the Boston University Valentine Invitational, placing eighth with a throw of 15.27 meters.

    Also at Central, sophomore Nuchwara Inthasit (Stonington) ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that placed third in 4:17.03 at the URI Coaches Invite on Saturday in Kingston, R.I.

    • At Southern Connecticut State University, Julianna Bonilla (Waterford) scored eight points and added six rebounds in 65-48 win over St. Anselm on Saturday. A starting guard, Bonilla had a season-high 14 points and made four 3-pointers against American International on Jan. 30.

    • Junior forward Alyssa Virtue (Fitch) had three points and a team-best 10 rebounds in Western Connecticut State University’s 59-55 win over Keene State on Saturday. Junior guard Francesca Foster (Fitch) added six points and six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

    • Stonehill College sophomore Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy) posted a career-best time of 2:18.75 while winning the 800 meters at the URI Coaches Invitational on Saturday.

    • Freshman Nalyce Dudley (New London) chipped in three points and six rebounds in 18 minutes, helping the Sacred Heart University women’s basketball team win its sixth straight game with a 58-53 victory over CCSU on Friday. The Pioneers (15-9, 9-1) are in first place in the Northeast Conference.

    Camel highlights

    • For the first time in 22 years, the Connecticut College men’s basketball team, seeded No. 3 in the NESCAC tournament, will host a quarterfinal game. They’ll face No. 6 Amherst at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

    Earlier this season, Conn defeated Amherst, 80-62, on Feb. 2 in New London.

    The Camels (18-6, 8-2) tied their highest regular season finish in program history by taking third. They’ve won six out of their last seven games. Senior David Murray leads the team in scoring (17.6 points) and rebounding (9.2) per game. Sophomore Elias Espinosa chips in 13.4 points.

    • The women’s basketball team ended the season with a 65-58 win over Williams College on Sunday. Prior to the NESCAC game, Aislinn McMahon, Hope Olson and Rebecca Oberman-Levine were honored during Senior Day festivities. McMahon had three rebounds and three steals in 13 minutes in her first start of the season.

    Oberman-Levine led the team in scoring at 12.2 points and grabbed a team-high tying 5.5 rebounds. The Camels finished at 6-17 overall, 1-9 in the league.

    Tracking the Bears

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Kira Wood was selected as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference offensive player of the week for women’s basketball. Wood averaged 20 points and 5.5 assists while leading the Bears to two wins. She also scored her 1,000th career point vs. Clark.

    The Bears (17-6, 6-3) reside in fourth place with two regular season games to go – at home versus Salve Regina (10-13, 4-5) on Wednesday and at Mount Holyoke (2-21, 0-9) on Saturday.

    • The men’s basketball team is tied for fifth place in the NEWMAC standings entering the final week of the regular season. The Bears (13-10, 6-8) will visit Salve Regina (10-13, 4-10) Wednesday in Newport and host Babson (12-12, 8-7) on Saturday.

    Mariners riding a wave

    • Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos is one of the top women’s basketball players in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. She ranks first in rebounding (12.8) and second in scoring (24.4 points).

    • In men’s basketball, Mitchell junior Jaylyn Clardy is second in the GNAC in scoring at 20.1 points.

    • The baseball team opens up its 2024 season by playing William Peace in Cary, N.C. The game will mark the Mariner coaching debut of Shawn Gilblair, who served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Mitchell from 2019 to 2022.
