    Local roundup: New London tops Fitch in ECC Div. I boys’ basketball

    Groton — Devan Williams scored 20 points to help lead New London to a 69-61 win over Fitch in an Eastern Connecticut Conference boys’ basketball game on Friday night.

    DeShaun Phillips had 15 points for the Whalers (16-4, 5-3). JJ Robinson had 21 points, Malakhi Sabb scored 17 and Xavier Goode had 12 points for Fitch (13-6, 4-4).

    In other games:

    • Quinn Speller had 22 points, five assists and four steals as Waterford finished unbeaten in ECC Division II play with a 78-59 win over Ledyard. Jordi Cassar had 16 points and seven rebounds, Parker Spencer had 14 points and Griffin Neal scored 11 for the Lancers (9-11, 6-0). Jo-Seth Gilbert had 17 points for Ledyard (4-15, 0-6).

    • Deondre Bransford had 18 points and 10 rebounds as Wheeler beat Plainfield 63-48 in an ECC Division IV game. Zane Brewer had 16 points and six rebounds and Kyle Kessler had 14 points and five steals the the Lions (14-5, 8-0).

    • Killingly outscored Bacon Academy 30-17 in the second half and won the ECC Division III game 53-39. Jace King scored 13 for Bacon (8-12, 2-6). Johnny Kazantzis led Killingly (9-10, 4-3) with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

    • Jaylen Hannas had 21 points and four assists for East Lyme in a 62-57 loss to Morgan on Thursday. Oliver Hibbard finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for East Lyme (12-8) and Mikey Timpano had 10 points.

    • Nick Stavesky had 13 points for Grasso Tech in a 67-45 loss to East Haven on Thursday. Joey Moore added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Grasso (10-9).

    H.S. boys’ swimming

    • Connor Foerster, Albert Zhu, Eduardo Morcos and Mingwen Duan won two events each as East Lyme/NFA beat West Haven 97-68 in an SCC Division II meet. Foerster won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.15) and 500 freestyle (5:23.69), Zhu won the 200 individual medley (2:12.73) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.30), Morcos won the 50 freestyle (24.26) and 100 freestyle (53.57) and Duan won the 100 butterfly (1:02.31) and 100 backstroke (1:03.43).

    The Vikings (2-7, 2-5) won a pair of relays with Ian Liu, Caleb Blanchard, Ryan Zhuang contributing to the win.

    H.S. girls’ basketball

    • Phoebe Carpenter (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Jenny Lopez (12 points, 12 assists) each had double-doubles as No. 3 Lyman Memorial defeated No. 6 Montville 59-25 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the ECC Division II tournament. Lyman (14-7) advanced to meet No. 2 Windham in Saturday’s semifinal round. Freshman Makayla Piaseczny also had 12 points for the Bulldogs. Jada Cheung had 12 points for Montville (10-11).

    Sun sign Peddy

    • The Connecticut Sun announced that guard Shey Peddy has signed a training camp contract. Peddy was originally drafted 23rd overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky but did not make her WNBA debut until the 2019 season where she played 15 contests with the Washington Mystics. The 5-7 guard began the 2020 season with the Mystics but was waived by the team and then picked up by the Phoenix Mercury later in the season.

    Peddy has played her last four seasons with the Mercury from 2020-2023. Over 116 career games, she has averaged 6.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. In addition to the WNBA, Peddy has enjoyed a successful career overseas where she has played in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Latvia and Turkey. Most recently, the Boston native signed with the UK-WBBL club, the London Lions, on January 22.

    Sea Unicorns announce schedule

    • The Norwich Sea Unicorns, the defending Futures League champions, will open the 2024 season May 24 in New Britain, followed by the home opener at Dodd Stadium on May 25. The home opener will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a tribute to the 2023 championship team. The schedule features 58 games, 32 at Dodd Stadium. The Sea Unicorns will be celebrating the 30th season of baseball at Dodd, including hosting the league’s All-Star Game on July 23.

    UConn football announces series with Delaware

    • The UConn football team will play games against Delaware during the 2025 and 2027 seasons, the school announced Thursday. The Huskies will make the trip to Delaware on Sept. 13, 2025, hosting the Blue Hens on Nov. 27, 2027. The two schools have not met since the 1998 season.
