    Local roundup: ECC boys’ basketball tournament pairings are announced

    The Eastern Connecticut Conference boys’ basketball tournament will get underway with three first-round games on Wednesday.

    The quarterfinals are Thursday (at higher seeds) and the semifinals are Saturday at Waterford. The Division II games are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with the Division I games at 4 and 6 p.m. The top seeds are St. Bernard (Division I) and Stonington (Division II).

    The finals are at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The Division II final is at 6 p.m., and the Division I game starts at 8 p.m. The semifinals and final will be streamed live by GameDay at theday.com.

    College baseball

    • Mitchell College failed to complete a three-game weekend sweep to open the season, falling to William Peace 17-7 in a seven-inning game at Cary, N.C. Former Montville standout Robbie Delacruz was 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI and Nicholas Bacale had an RBI double.

    The Mariners opened their season with a pair of wins on Saturday, giving new coach Shawn Gilblair his first career wins. The Mariners swept William Peace 8-4 and 17-5.

    Mitchell won the opener with four runs in the eighth inning. Savier Paige had three hits, including two doubles and Delacruz and East Lyme’s Owen Robbins had two hits each. Bracale was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored in Game 2 and Angel Galindez singled, homered and drove in two runs.

    Women’s swimming

    • Connecticut College finished in 10th place at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships at Middlebury College.

    The Camels ended the four-day event with a team score of 531. Williams captured the overall team title while Tufts University finished as runnerup.

    Three Camels earned points in the 1,650 free. Claire Hoffmann was 17th in 18:02.79, Hannah Guay was 21st (18:11.52) and Lily Werges was 24th (18:20.49) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Hope Lane, Kailin Fuller, Keira Haas and Kate Edison finished eighth in 3:32.01.

    Jenna Charlat and Haas took part in consolation finals. Charlat tied for 11th in the 200 back (2:05.15) while Haas finished 12th in the 100 free (52.74).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • NFA’s Trinity Ambruso won all four events in the Wildcats’ 136.45-133.1 loss to Ellington/Tolland on Saturday. Ambruso’s all-around score was 37.25 and she won the vault (9.1), bars (9.2), beam (9.4) and floor (9.55). Gracyn Goodale of NFA (3-8) was fourth in all-round (32.15) and teammate Allison Wojnar was third on the beam (8.85).

    Men’s hockey

    • Conn College closed out the regular season with a 4-1 loss to Bowdoin in a NESCAC game on Saturday. Kei Tasuda scored, Sean Dynan made 27 saves and Logan Cleary and Pete Stanger had assists for the Camels (9-13-2, 7-11). Conn is the sixth seed in the NESCAC tournament and plays at No. 3 Tufts in the quarterfinals next Saturday.

    Women’s hockey

    • Conn College ended its season with a 3-0 loss to No. 13 Colby in a NESCAC game on Saturday. Devon Galizio made 28 saves for the Camels (7-11-6, 2-11-3).

    NEWMAC basketball

    • Coast Guard will be playing in first-round games in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference tournaments. The men are seeded fifth and play at No. 4 Babson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The women and seeded fourth and host No. 5 Babson on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
