    Local roundup: Six local wrestlers reach State Open semifinals

    New Haven — Two Lyman/Windham Tech wrestlers and two East Lyme/Norwich Tech wrestlers were among the six locals who advanced to the semifinals at the State Open championship meet Friday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

    Competing in the semifinals beginning at 11:30 a.m. Saturday will be Lyman/Windham Tech’s Hunter Sanchez (120 pounds) and Lucas Judd (132), East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Lincoln Carlson (175) and Brayden Soleau (190), Old Lyme’s Chase Catalano (165) and Bacon Academy’s Dante Colella (175).

    Judd, the No. 10 seed at 132, edged No. 2 Kyle Currier of RHAM 5-4 in the quarterfinals. Carlson, meanwhile, the No. 2 seed, has outscored his two opponents 31-3 so far, pinning No. 10 Eric Coons of Danbury in 3:42 to reach the 175-pound semis.

    The State Open championship round is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.

    H.S. riflery

    • Charles Goede fired a 179 out of 200 to lead Grasso Tech to the Connecticut Technical Conference championship at Quaker Hill Rod & Gun Club. The Eagles were first with 885 points, followed by Vinal Tech with 873 and Wilcox Tech with 819. Also scoring for Grasso were Elora Loos (178), Gavin Jameson (177), Chase Beattie (176) and Logan Gurchik (175). Beattie led Grasso this season with an average of 181.

    H.S. boys’ basketball

    • Connor McRae finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals and Norwich Tech outscored Kaynor Tech 24-8 in the third quarter on the way to a 69-52 victory in a Connecticut Technical Conference tournament play-in game. Collin Schulze had 13 points, four steals and three rebounds for Norwich Tech (9-12), which advanced to the quarterfinals, and Daniel Hess had 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Matthias Benson had 18 Points for Kaynor Tech (9-12), which led 35-30 at halftime.

    • Ryan Gemaly had 12 points and Charis Johnson 11 for Grasso Tech in a 70-47 loss to Platt Tech on Thursday. Grasso Tech is 10-10.

    Mooney first after Day One

    • UConn freshman Josh Mooney of Stonington is in first place after Day One of the men’s heptathlon at the Big East championship meet at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Center in Chicago.

    Mooney won the heptathlon’s 60-meter dash (6.90 seconds) and the long jump (22 feet, 7.25 inches), finishing second in the shot put (41-1) and third in the high jump (5-10.75). He has compiled 2,971 points, followed closely by Butler’s Jack Elder (2,935) and UConn’s Max Ringwall (2,787).

    The event will finish Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000. Mooney’s best score in the heptathlon this season is 5,217.

    Men’s swimming

    • Justin Finkel of Conn College defended his title in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:24.66 to break his own meet record as well as the Colby College pool record on the second day of the NESCAC Championship. Conn is ninth with a two-day total of 306. Williams leads the field of 11 teams with 811. Also for the Camels, Cam Bizjak was sixth in one-meter diving with 384.7 points and Ian Sullivan seventh in the 500 free in 4:35.29.
