    East Lyme/Norwich Tech’s Carlson wins State Open 175-pound title; Ledyard’s Irizarry, OL’s Gemme win girls’ titles

    New Haven — Lincoln Carlson of the East Lyme/Norwich Tech co-op won the State Open wrestling title Saturday in the 175-pound division.

    Carlson, a junior, who won the Class L title last week, raised his record to 42-0. The No. 2 seed, Carlson beat No. 9 Maximus Morse of Xavier 8-2 in the final.

    Two other local wrestlers lost in the finals. Carlson’s teammate Brayden Soleau, the No. 7 seed, lost in the 190-pound final, falling to fourth-seeded Maximus Konopka of Simsbury 4-0. Old Lyme freshman Chase Catalano, the No. 3 seed, lost in the 165 final, falling to No. 1 Fisher Stites of Newtown 9-1.

    James Linder Jr. of Montville finished third at 144, beating Kyle Levesque of Xavier 5-1. Fourth-place finishes went to Landon Herdic of Norwich Free Academy (106) and Dante Colella of Bacon Academy (175).

    Lucas Judd of Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech (132) and Devon Powers of Waterford (165) had fifth-place finishes and sixth-place finishes went to Hunter Sanchez of Lyman (120), Dylan Vanegas of NFA (144), Cameron Sammarco of Lyman (175) and Aidan Schlimgen of Ledyard (285).

    NFA finished ninth for the team title with 54.5 points. Xavier won with 237.5, East Lyme/Norwich Tech was 10th (52.5), Eastern Connecticut Conference champion Killingly was tied with 11th (52) and Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech was 13th (49).

    • Two locals won titles at the Connecticut Girls State Championship. Ledyard’s sophomore Tatianna Irizarry and Old Lyme junior Hoshena Gemme won titles. Irizarry was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the event.

    Irizarry won the 107 title, pinning Addisyn Herdic of Ellis Tech in 3:57 and Gemme pinned Rylee Donohue of Norwalk in 3:58 in the 132 final.

    Fiona Hood of NFA was third at 185 pounds.
