    Local high school roundup: Maple Siu leads a big day for Lancers at ECC fencing

    Griswold — Waterford High School’s Maple Siu was the girls’ epee champion and the Lancers took first place in three of the four disciplines at Saturday’s Eastern Connecticut Conference Fencing Championship at Griswold High School.

    Waterford won the boys’ and girls’ epee and the girls’ foil divisions, with Norwich Free Academy finishing first in boys’ foil.

    In girls’ epee, Siu was first, followed by Elaine Brookhart of Fitch second, Waterford’s Hazel Siu third and Ledyard’s Klaie Gieleghem fourth. Zhuning Gao of St. Bernard was first in girls’ foil, with Waterford’s Kyijong Tenzin second, Waterford’s Jiarou Liao third and East Lyme’s Abigail Rodes fourth.

    Fitch’s Nathan Johnson was the boys’ epee champion, followed by Waterford’s Aidan DuPont, St. Bernard’s Gianni Torres and Waterford’s Tyler Adams. New London’s Andrew Mendez won the boys’ foil division, with East Lyme taking the second and third spots with Caleb Haylon and Nathan Reith and NFA’s Gabriel Bartlett fourth.

    In the regular-season, Waterford won the Division I title in boys’ and girls’ epee and girls’ foil, with NFA taking the crown in boys’ foil. In Division II, Bacon Academy won the regular-season boys’ epee and girls’ foil titles, with Ledyard taking girls’ epee and St. Bernard winning the boys’ foil division.

    Gymnastics

    • East Lyme/Waterford/St. Bernard finished with the highest team totals on the uneven bars and balance beam and finished second overall at the Class M state championship. Ellington/Tolland won the meet with 137.000 points to East Lyme/Waterford/St. Bernard’s 136.225. Fitch was seventh with 120.900. Competing for the ECC champion Vikings were Capri Sferrazza, Sylvi Otter, Olivia Gionet, Taylor Filosi and Harley Pendleton. The State Open championship is scheduled for March 2 at New Milford High School.

    • Trinity Ambruso finished with an all-around score of 38.4, the highest scorer in every event at the Class L championship, leading Norwich Free Academy to a fourth-place finish with 132.25 points. There are no individual event champions at the state class meets, which focus on team scores, but Ambruso scored a 9.7 on beam, 9.6 on bars and floor and 9.5 on vault to pace the Wildcats. Trumbull won the title with 144.225 points.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Leland Hine finished with 20 points in No. 3 Old Lyme’s 61-46 victory over No. 6 East Hampton in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament. The Wildcats advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals to meet No. 2 Morgan. Charlie Sahadi added 12 points for Old Lyme (16-5). Brady Lynch had 19 for East Hampton.

    Boys’ hockey

    • Nick Rembish scored two goals and Kaden Casteel had one for the Eastern Connecticut Eagles in a 3-3 overtime tie with Staples. Wade Larson and Ethan LoVetere had assists for the Eagles (7-9-3).
