    Local high school roundup: Shot putters Matlock, Amy give the ECC a 1-2 finish at New Englands

    Boston — East Lyme High School’s Tommy Matlock won the New England championship Saturday in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 62 feet.

    The only thing better than that?

    Matlock’s Eastern Connecticut Conference competitor and friend, Norwich Free Academy’s Chris Amy, was second with a personal best of 60-2.75, also a school record, giving the league a spectacular 1-2 finish at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.

    Mason Leak of Bacon Academy was third in the boys’ high jump with a personal-best leap of 6-5 and Ledyard’s Christian Wiltshire was tied for 15th in that event at 6-1. East Lyme’s boys’ 4x800 team of Jilali Benjdid, Maddox Grillo-Smith, Kai Ritz and Sam Leone was 13th in 8:12.87.

    Gymnastics

    • NFA sophomore Trinity Ambruso was the State Open all-around champion with 37.5 points, edging Trumbull’s Kayla Algeri, who finished with 37.275.

    Ambruso also won the balance beam with 9.725 and finished second on vault (9.425) and floor (9.35) and was fifth on the uneven bars (9.0).

    Wrestling

    • Lincoln Carlson of East Lyme/Norwich Tech finished third at 175 pounds at the New England wrestling championship in Providence, winning his third-place bout against David Pento Jr. of Londonderry, N.H., 9-7. Montville’s James Linder Jr. was fourth at 144 pounds, dropping his third-place consolation match 4-0 against Kyle Levesque of East Hampton. Carlson and Linder Jr. both dropped into the consolation round with losses in the championship semifinals. Malachi Fowler of Windham was fourth at 215 pounds.

    • Hoshena Gemme of Old Lyme won the New England girls’ championship at 132 pounds, edging Jillian Glasky of Mt. Anthony, Vermont, 7-6 in the final. Ledyard’s Tatianna Irizarry was second at 107 pounds, falling to Maddie Ripley of Oceanside, Maine, 6-2 in the championship match.

    Cheerleading

    • East Lyme, which previously won its third straight ECC title, took first place in the Class L cheerleading championship. Fitch won the co-ed division at the championship meet with a score of 92.9 points, defeating New Britain and Shelton. The Falcons, who had seniors Tahjanae Knight and Alani Farris named all-state, were the Class L division champions a year ago. Montville placed third in Class S.

    Hockey

    • The Eastern Connecticut Eagles advanced to the Nutmeg Conference title game by beating Tri-Town 3-2 in a semifinal on Friday night. The Eagles fell in Saturday’s championship game 3-1 to Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks.

    Wade Larson (East Lyme) had a goal and assist in the semifinal, Gavin Bessenaire (Killingly) and Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) scored goals and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon) and Will Sluggett (St. Bernard) had assists for the Eagles.

    In the final, Drew Sager (East Lyme) scored for the Eagles (8-11-3), assisted by Larson.
