    Local high school roundup: Falcons, Eagles fly through first round of state tournament

    Groton — Xavier Goode had 24 points, including five 3-point field goals, as the ninth-seeded Fitch High School boys’ basketball team won its first-round game in the Division III state tournament Tuesday, beating No. 24 Windham 81-60.

    Malakhi Sabb finished with 14 points for Fitch (16-7), which advanced to the second round to meet No. 8 Seymour, and JJ Robinson had eight points, 13 assists and five steals.

    Anden Gonzales had 15 points for Windham.

    In other games:

    • Charis Johnson finished with 17 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead No. 14 Grasso Tech to a 64-59 victory over No. 19 HMTCA in the opening round of the Division V state tournament. Joey Moore added 15 points, Ethan Chacha 17 points and 11 rebounds, Kelvin Pauling 11 rebounds and Jerry Santiago six assists for Grasso (11-10), which advanced to play No. 3 Old Lyme in the second round Thursday.

    Girls’ basketball

    • Jenny Lopez had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for No. 10 Lyman Memorial in a 62-30 loss to No. 2 Thomaston in the quarterfinals of the Class S state tournament Monday night. Freshman Makayla Piaseczny added eight points for Lyman, which finished the season 16-9. Thomaston led 13-3 after one quarter.

    Cheerleading

    • Fitch (co-ed) and East Lyme (Class L) won state cheerleading championships Saturday at Trumbull High School.

    It was Fitch’s second straight state title, while the Vikings added to their resume following their overall Eastern Connecticut Conference championship.

    “We also broke the record for the school’s high score at states with a score of 92.9,” Fitch coach Melissa Robinson said. “The coaches are unspeakably proud of their incredible athletes.”

    Members of the Fitch team: Khloe Baldoz, Callie Balsley, Isabella Braucci, Mya Duncan, Alani Farris (named to the all-State team), Kaylonna General, Akira Gregor, Lavon Green, Alexis Johnson, Tahjanae Knight (named to the all-state team), Maddie Level, Lauren Pelletier, Destinee Pena and Jayla Robinson.

    The Falcons are coached by Robinson, Melissa Allyn, Amara Robinson and Kristen Gomez.

    All-state athletes Lily Daley and Linnaya Rheaume led the Vikings, who scored 93.25 points.

    “They were all incredible,” East Lyme associate head coach Hannah Taylor said. “Full throttle for sure.”

    Team members were Mea Adanti, Allison Baker, Jordyn Bogue, Allison Cabral, Lily Daley, Madison Davis, Gianna DiLoreto, Annabelle Dueker, Hika Ferriera, Kaylie Filosi, Jazmin Hall, Lily Hyatt, Anna Prevost, Linnaya Rheaume, Gianna Salpietro and Hannah Smith.

    East Lyme is coached by Taylor and Kristin Morgan and assistants Angela Young, Sydney Taylor, Ashleigh Galbo and Annette McDonald.

    Also, Montville was third in Class S, Wheeler eighth and Griswold ninth. In the co-ed division, Norwich Free Academy placed sixth and New London ninth. Waterford was seventh in Class M, followed by Ledyard eighth and Bacon Academy 12th.
