    Local roundup: Mitchell baseball team wins in Florida

    Davenport, Fla. — The Mitchell College baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat Coe College 6-5 on Saturday afternoon in a Russmatt Baseball Invitational game.

    The Mariners (5-1) are 2-0 on their Florida trip.

    Mitchell trailed 3-0 before Angel Galindez hit a two-run homer in the in the sixth and an RBI single by Thai-ler Sestokas in the seventh tied the score before a bases-loaded walk to Galindez gave Mitchell a 4-3 lead. A two-run double in the top of the eighth by Michael Gajda gave Mitchell the lead for good.

    Mitchell beat Wisconsin-Oshkosh 5-4 on Friday. Owen Robbins of East Lyme, Galindez, Savier Paige and Cole Lalli had multiple hits for Mitchell. Jacob Quiles pitched four shutout innings in relief for the win.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Sarah Skurat and Caitlyn Coates scored four goals each as Coast Guard beat Hartford 15-3. Abby McAllister had two goals and three assists, Addy Bass scored twice, Isabella Judge had a goal and an assist and Coates had two assists for the Bears (4-1).

    • Colby beat Connecticut College 17-9 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Elizabeth Gill had three goals and an assist, Aine Downey had two goals and an assist and Campbell Johnston scored twice for the Camels (1-2, 0-2). Ally Franz had four goals for Colby (2-0, 2-0).

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Conn College lost to Colby 13-12 in a NESCAC game. Colby (2-1, 1-1) took its only lead of the day when Gavin Rothenberg scored with 26.5 seconds remaining. Jack Tenzer had four goals and two assists, Ryan Breheny scored twice and JJ Ford andPatrick Atkins hada goal and an assist each for the Camels (0-2, 0-2).

    H.S. track

    • Norwich Free Academy’s Chris Amy finished 12th in the championship division of the boys’ shot put at the Nike Indoor Nationals in New York with a toss of 57 feet, 11 inches. East Lyme’s Tom Matlock was 20th at 56-6.5.

    • Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert was 17th in the New Balance Indoor Nationals girls’ two-mile event in Boston, finishing in 10:48.26.

    H.S. swimming

    • Waterford’s Alex Startz qualified for two events in the Class L championships. In the qualifying at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford, Startz got in the 200 individual medley (24th, 2:13:82) and the 100 butterfly (17th, 57:84).

    Men’s indoor track

    • Coast Guard sophomore Josh Banks finished sixth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III championships on Friday at Virginia Beach, Va. Banks had a personal best 5.03 meters (16-feet, 6-inches).

    Women’s indoor track

    • Allie Wildsmith of Coast Guard finishe tied for seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Division III championships at Virginia Beach, Va. Wildsmith cleared 1.68 meters (5-feet, 6-inches). On Friday, Coast Guard’s Paige Phillips ran a personal best 16:54.64 in the 5K, good for an eighth-place finish.

    Alexa Estes of Connecticut College finished 14th in the 800, finishing with a time of 2:13.27. The Camels distance medley relay team of Grace McDonough, LK Tucker, Estes and Abby Fernald were 12th with a time of 12:17.22. Fernald was also 11th in the mile with a time of 5:00.02.

    Conn’s Emma Wheeler was 17th in the pentathlon, compiling 3,122 points. Wheeler was 13th in the 60 hurdles (9.21), 17th in the high jump (1.47), fifth in the shut put (11.04), 17th in the long jump (4.83) and 19th in the 800 (2:41.53).
