    UConn wins its first Hockey East women’s title

    Storrs — Top seed UConn won its first Hockey East women’s tournament title, beating No. 2 Northeastern 1-0 in overtime on Saturday at the Toscano Family Ice Forum.

    Megan Woodworth scored with 35 seconds left in overtime for the win. UConn (25-7-5) receives the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The entire field will be announced on Sunday. It will be the first NCAA tourney appearance for UConn, in it 24th season as a program.

    UConn junior goaltender Tia Chan won Hockey East most valuable player with a 38-save performance. Northeastern goaltender Gwyneth Philips had 51 saves. Northeastern had won the last six Hockey East tournament titles.

    As the clock was winding down in overtime, Ainsley Svetek got a pass from Riley Grimley to then slap one on goal as Woodworth got the deflection to hit top shelf and the celebration was on.
