    Local roundup: Conn’s Murray honored by D3hoops

    New London — Connecticut College senior David Murray was named the Region 1 Player of the Year by the website D3hoops.com on Tuesday.

    Murray had already been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the NABC District 1 Player of the Year. He was joined on the D3hoops first team by Shane Regan of Wesleyan, Tyree Mitchell of St. Joseph, Aaron Nkrumah of Worcester State and Henry Vetter of Trinity.

    Murray ranked among the top five in the NESCAC in scoring (17.7 per game), rebounding (8.9) and blocks (2.2) while shooting 58 percent from the floor this season. He also blocked 53 shots.

    College baseball

    • Avery Point beat SUNY Rockland 25-10 on a mercy rule at Auburndale, Florida. Elian Collado had three hits and drove in six runs for the Pointers (2-7), Spencer Stahl had three hits and scored four runs and Roman Hausmann and East Lyme’s John Bureau had two hits each. The Pointers finish their Florida trip on Thursday against Moraine Valley CC.

    • Coast Guard improved to 4-0 with a doubleheader sweep of New England College on Monday at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Bears (4-0) won the opener 10-3 and the second game 11-1. Harrison Milbert allowed three hits over six shutout innings with seven strikeouts to win the opener and Sean Harmon won the second game with five shutout innings, allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts.

    Wyatt Duthu had four hits and scored five runs in the two games, Nathan Stafford had four hits and Richard Barkley doubled twice and drove in four runs.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Kate Coughlin scored three goals and had two assists as Conn College beat Merchant Marine 17-3 at Sparks, Maryland. Janet Howard had three goals, Ava Gershon and Emma Ognibene had two goals each and Campbell Johnston and Aine Downey had two assists and a goal each for the Camels (2-2).

    College softball

    • Mitchell College split a doubleheader at Clermont, Florida, beating Pittsburgh-Greensburg 2-1 then losing to Cortland 14-6. Emily Reynolds pitched a five-hitter against Greensburg, allowing no earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Brooke Whitmarsh was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

    Against Cortland, Gemma Landry, Olivia DeCicco and Whitmarsh had two hits each for the Mariners (1-5) and DeCicco and Whitmarsh drove in two runs each.

    Men’s tennis

    • Conn College beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 8-1 at Orlando, Florida. Jules Taylor-Kerman, Sigmund Winiecki and Walker Mulligan each won their match and were on winning doubles teams for the Camels (3-3).

    H.S. swimming

    • The Fitch co-op finished 10th in the Class M state championship meet Monday at Wesleyan. The Falcons scored 235 points. Pomperaug won the title with 891.

    A fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay was the top finish for Fitch, with Evan Hespeler, Gabe Pacheco, Will O’Donnell and Sterling Welsh finishing in 1:42.72.

    Welsh was sixth in the 50 freestyle (22.58), Pacheco was sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.94) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:07.79) and O’Donnell was seventh in the 500 freestyle (5:03.48) and eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:51.43).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Norwich Free Academy’s Trinity Ambruso finished tied for second in New England on Saturday in the all-around competition with 37.725 points. Riley Salerno of Central Catholic (Mass.) was first with 37.775 and Ali Ganley of Wilmington/Bedford (Mass.) tied for second with Ambruso.

    Ambruso tied for third in the uneven bars (9.6) and was fourth on floor (9.575), tied for seventh on vault (9.35) and tied for 25th on beam (9.2).

    Capri Sferrazza of East Lyme/St. Bernard/Waterford was fifth on uneven bars (9.5) and 10th all-around (36.725).
