    Stonington H.S. to add five, plus 1979 golf team, to Hall of Fame

    Stonington — Five inductees, plus the 1979 golf team which won the state championship, will be added to the Stonington High School Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Saturday, April 27, at the Stonington High Cafe/Commons.

    The 1979 golf team, coached by the late Pete Young, a member of the school’s hall of fame, went 14-0 in Eastern Connecticut Conference play and won the ECC tournament at Norwich Country Club on the way to the Connecticut Division II state championship at Torrington Country Club.

    Stonington Hall of Famer Lou Stefanski was the Bears’ team captain and he and teammates Randy Grills, Mike Young and Anthony Kargul earned All-ECC recognition.

    Also being honored are:

    • Dixon Hemphill (Class of 1942) — Hemphill was a track and field standout, helping to lead the Bears to the 1942 Class B state championship, placing in the discus and pole vault. He finished first in the pole vault at the ECC meet in 1941 and was second in the pole vault and high jump at the league meet in 1942. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Hemphill attended Middlebury College, graduating in 1949, and was later inducted into the athletic hall of fame there. He has continued his athletic career into his 90s, running 12 marathons and more than 60 triathlons. He was a member of the men’s age 90-94 relay teams that set world records in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays at the National Masters Championships in 2015.

    • Jeff Pearce (Class of 2010) — Pearce played soccer and lacrosse, leading the Stonington lacrosse team to an ECC division championship for the first time in 2009 and to the Class S state tournament semifinals in 2010, the best postseason performance in program history. Pearce was a two-time All-ECC pick in lacrosse and a first team all-state selection as a senior. He was also a two-time ECC honoree in soccer.

    • Chloe Slater (Class of 2013) — Slater played in state championships in field hockey and tennis during her career. As a member of the field hockey team, she was a two-time All-ECC selection and a first team all-stater as a senior, nominated for state player of the year, as the Bears won four ECC titles and reached the Class S state championship game in 2012. Slater was a three-time first team All-ECC pick in tennis, the runner-up in the ECC tournament as a junior and the Bears reached the championship in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, winning the 2013 Class S title. Slater is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Paris, having researched early discovery cancer therapeutics.

    • Richard Woodworth (contributor) — Woodworth was the first head coach of boys’ soccer at Stonington from 1971-78. He was later assistant athletic director for 25 years. After retiring, Woodworth became principal of St. Michael’s School in Pawcatuck and later at St. Mary’s in Jewett City, remaining involved in the community, including serving as president of the Wequetequock Fire District and Pawcatuck Lions Club, treasurer of the Stonington Community Center and the Stonington Education Association and as a lifetime member of the Westerly Elks.

    • Dave Walsh (contributor) — Walsh was the first girls’ soccer coach at Stonington, from the program’s inception as a club team in 1994 through 2017, finishing 23 varsity seasons with an overall record of 205-168-21. Under his leadership, the Bears won ECC Medium Division titles in 2003 (co-champs), 2010, 2012 and 2014. They qualified for the state tournament 14 times and reached the Class M quarterfinals in 2004 and 2005, and the semifinals in 1998 and 2003. He was The Day’s Coach of the Year in 1997. The Bears received the National Soccer Coaches of America Team Academic Award for 10 consecutive years.

    The hall of fame induction will begin at 3 p.m. with a social hour and hors d'oeuvres, followed by the ceremony at 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 each.
