    Local roundup: Coast Guard splits NEWMAC softball doubleheader

    Wellesley, Mass. — Coast Guard split with Wellesley in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday.

    Coast Guard won the opener 6-4 and lost the second game 2-1. Both games went eight innings. In the opener, Coast Guard’s Lillia Farlow homered in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. The Bears scored three in the top of the eighth on a two-run single by Abriana Schmutz and an error that allowed Schmutz to score an the Bears hung on for the win.

    Isabella Shroyer won Game 1, pitching a seven-hitter and allowing no earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks. Julia Breidenthal was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Bears (7-11, 6-2) in Game 2.

    H.S. baseball

    • Jack Treat had two hits and three RBI on Saturday in Montville’s 16-2 win over Ledyard in five innings. Hunter Sylvia also had a single, double and two RBI for Montville (4-2), which broke the game open with 12 runs in the third inning. Ledyard is 0-5.

    • Ayden Kempesta went 3-for-3 with two doubles and pitched four scoreless innings as Norwich Free Academy defeated Westerly 14-2 in five innings Saturday. Jonas Tiburcio, Ryan Cleary, Logan Deshefy and Avery Guernsey added two hits apiece for the Wildcats (3-2) and Derek Macy contributed a double and an RBI.

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Mark Sauchuk had three goals and three assists for St. Bernard/Wheeler in a 10-9 loss to Old Saybrook in overtime Saturday. Ben Howes and Jimmy Niles added two goals each for the Saints (1-2).

    H.S. crew

    • Stonington’s first varsity eight finished first Saturday at the Tabor-Simsbury Invite in Worcester. Members of the winning team were Ahmed Salha, Roan Schaffer, Ethan King, Jesse Hinkle, Peter Wronowski, Jack Flaherty, Alex Moore, Matthew Drago and coxswain Abigail Steeno.

    “After our first race last weekend, the boys identified a couple key areas they wanted to improve: start stronger and race more aggressively through the middle 500 meters,” Stonington coach Sally Machin said. “Successfully making those changes today, the boys’ first varsity won against a very competitive field.”

    Stonington’s first varsity girls, novice girls, second varsity boys and third varsity boys all finished second.

    Next weekend, Stonington hosts East Lyme and Old Lyme on the Mystic River.

    Men’s track & field

    • Graham Josephson set the Conn College record in the decathlon Saturday, leading the Camels to a third-place finish at the Silfen Invitational, finishing with 104 points. Josephson compiled 5,510 points, finishing first in the 100 meters (11.34 seconds) and in the 110 hurdles (17.43). he qualified for the New England Division III meet, as did teammate Chris Koskinen, second in the decathlon with 5,455 points. Koskinen picked up two first-place finishes, winning the pole vault (4.65 meters) and 400 (50.86).

    Also for Conn, Jonathan Norton won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:51.31 and Ellis Iurilli-Hough was third (9:47.44), while Matt Scardigno claimed a victory in the 5,000 with a time of 14:33.15, with Ethan Bush second in 14:45.65.

    Jayson Firmin won the triple jump (13.65 meters) and the Camels got relay victories from the 4x100 team of Ty Dorow, Francisco Moreira, Dylan Haime and Luke Alban and from the 4x800 team of Kevin Lieue, Lucas Vasquez, Noah Vernick and Sam Walker.

    Women’s track & field

    • Emma Wheeler dominated the heptathlon with 4,342 points and Conn College finished second out of 39 teams Saturday at the Silfen Invitational with 113 points. Wheeler earned six first-place finishes, winning the 100-meter hurdles (15.43 seconds), high jump (1.45 meters), shot put (10.97 meters), 200 meters (27.05 seconds), long jump (5.07 meters) and javelin (33.82 meters).

    Also for the Camels, Alexa Estes finished first in the 800 (2:13.99), second in the 400 (59.22) and was a member of the second-place 4x400 relay team. Grace McDonough earned a win in the 1,500 (4:34.81) and was second in the 800 (2:17.64), with teammate Abby Fernald coming in second in the 1,500 (4:38.64).

    Alsacia Timmerman claimed victory in the 10,000 with a personal-best 36:43.84 and Conn’s 4x800 relay team of Abby Williams, April Schilling, Addie Fuller and LK Tucker was first in 9:54.19. Edin Sisson was second in the 5,000 in 17:42.18.

    College baseball

    • Liam Chamberlain picked up the win in game one and Ben Centurelli earned the save as UConn Avery split a doubleheader Saturday against Monroe College, winning the opener 10-8 and losing the second game by the same margin. Romany Hausmann had a go-ahead grand slam in the second game, but the Pointers (9-11) couldn’t hold on to the lead.

    Men’s tennis

    • Walker Mulligan and James Serhant III won at No. 3 doubles in Conn College’s 8-1 loss Saturday against Hamilton, with the duo improving to 6-5 on the season. Conn is 8-6 overall, 1-6 NESCAC.
